Ever have a horse that won't run in a small arena? Where my horse is boarded the inside arena is small and I've noticed my horse just doesn't give his all in it, he's never had a great time in there. Today he went out and ran a 20 second pole pattern then later ran almost second off in the barrels pretty much. In the larger outside arena and at other places in big arenas, he runs 1D. He will either be in the 1D or at the top of the 2D depending on the place. But he will fly around a set in a large pen and give it his all, but nope in a small arena he won't run hard. I've even asked others if he runs harder in a large pen. He's a small horse at only 14.3 so his size doesn't hinder him. I've just never seen a horse run so different.

I've had a few horses that didn't do particularly well in small pens. They just never could gain enough speed between barrels.
Just made it easier to pick where I would take them.

I have one rodeo horse who needs at least a 14 second pattern to be able to clock. Those 12 & 13 second barns just don't let him shine, and he's also much better if we can really get a run at the first barrel. I will say that the more small pens I take him to, the better we get at them but I don't think the traps will ever really be his forte.

I think it's how narrow it is, it's only a few strides from the 1st to the 2nd and he just won't go. It's one of the arenas we have issues hitting barrels to, he turns into them. But then again the fence is pretty close.Running poles in this arena he's fine, but he can stretch out in the poles.

I learned with my retired mare you kinda have to be wide as* open going thru thr the gate if you didnot coma running at the gate you gonna be at least one second off. Also, be careful with goning thru the gate also, if the pen is real narrow, if you are turning right barrel first, better be on left side of the chute or your approach not good enough and she would shut down to make first barrel. If i didnot haulit thru chute she would shut more so she was more a push style and dont think about sitting until your leg was past, also. My mare never hit a barrel, but if i did not do what i just said she would shut down more where she was supposed to rate and coukd not get my speed back up. Imagine some of push style horses you have to start from the back 40, type thing. Just
