| I have 2 horses on 1/4 tube GastroGard daily. Its getting expensive lol. I want to look into giving them compounded omeprazole. Curious about price and efficiency/ experiences. I know there is controversy about whether its worth it, ect but honestly, I can't keep doing this and I'm afraid to take them off of it. They are having to be stalled due to the situation (one is lame). They both have free choice grass hay and the injured one gets alfalfa. Low starch grain, ect but I still want to keep them on omep.
Thanks |

Location: North Dakota | I tried it when I suspected ulcers in my guy because it's soooo cheap. It made no difference but I think that's just because ulcers were not the issue. I DID however talk to a vet who said that powdered omeprazole is unstable and does not work, that it must be stabilized into some sort of paste. I also have heard that extended periods of omeprazole is not healthy but maybe someone with more background will chime in. |

| Extended use of anything is not good.
Omeprazole needs a buffering agent to make it through the stomach, if there is not buffering agent it will be a waste of money.
If you can find enteric coated omeprazole this would be another possibility |

Location: South Central Florida | Had a horse scopedc found to have 2 grade 2 ulcers and another spot started. We started with Ulcerguard, but it was so expensive. purchased from Horseprerace an omeprazol paste and had excellent results. |

| I think I am going to try to find something to put them on supplement wise to try to get them off "medications." It a very scary thing for me. They have both been treated and have been on the 1/4 tube once a day for a while but the $.... I like the look of Uckele's GUT. Might try it. |

| I have liked the Smart Pack products, and they list them in a way the ingredients can be compared. When we haul Tres, he must have the acid reducers. Supplements just don't do it. I love THE products but in his case it was not as effective as just giving the paste while hauling. For long term, I would probably do what you are doing and look for something to help. I have had good luck with Ranitidine as well. |

Location: MI | I had heard that the compounded was unstable, didnt reach hind gut, etc. I didnt have any UlcerGuard this weekend to give the 2 that stress a lot, so I just gave the compound I have been trying. Both horses stayed relaxed during the warm ups, both entered the arena quietly which isnt always the case, and both stayed focused. Way cheaper than the UlcerGuard and it seems to be working for me. |

Location: North Dakota | My friend (a pharmacist) compounds her own omeprazole with human grade ingredients. Very well researched and proven! 30 day supply for $200 at the recommended treatment dose of 10ml a day. PM me if you want her info. It is molasses flavored as well so the horses actually like it. :) |

| Thanks y'all.
At $200/month compounded its just a touch more expensive to continue with the ulcergard at 1/4 tube a day...
My plans are to find a supplement that can take away the daily med and give ranitidine the day before, day of and day after a race. I looked at the Smartpak supplements and comparing it to the GUT, it does have a little more in it but its $10 more a month. IF both labels on each supplement are telling the truth, it was more worth it to me to get the GUT. I have one of the horses on Farrier's Formula Xtra Strength, so I'm trying to limit my supplement spending. They aren't helping lol. |

| Precision pharmacy in Bakersville, CA randitine/omeprazole its buffered and is almost identical to ulcer guard. Its $11.95 a tube through them...you need a script from your vet. Next day to your door shipping. Its the number one supplier for most vets using compounded meds. |
