Soo... My gelding kicked the fence this weekend, he caught it square with his hoof. No big deal, then he went to walk off and wouldn't bear any weight. He walked it out and doesn't appear lame. I gave him bute right away and locked him up by himself. I watched him for awhile, after about an hour, hour and half later I noticed he had swelling on the front of his hock. It's not severe, but still enough to worry me, so I hosed him down, and have been applying Surpass. I don't think it's a huge deal, just the impact must have irritated or hurt something. I would schedule him to go to the vet, but I'm pretty sure they'll just tell me to keep doing what I'm doing. I've had issues with tendon sheath effusions with him before and when I caught them right away they went away with this same treatment method. Does anyone think I should try anything different? Or am I on the right track for treatment? I'm open to opinions!!

I would say you are on the right track, and me if I still had swelling or any tenderness after a week, I would be going to a vet.

The reason being is he could have fractured a hock, or a cannon bone, I had both happen on two different horses neither horse was lame. Both were treated aggressively by the vet and both are sound and running

That's what I was thinking, I'll give it a week and see if it shows any difference and go from there. I've seen other horses with severely injured hocks that never get lame, that's why I'm cautious.
