Location: Montana | How do you know whether or not to go with a regular/semi-quarter horse bars saddle or a wide/full quarter horse bars saddle? I know there is a different between flex tree and treeless, but my gelding has me really confused. And I'll explain a little: My gelding is coming 3 y/o in June, and I know he will fill out more as he gets older. I purchased a Double J saddle with the Pro tree in it with a 6 3/4 gullet, regular tree. It basically sits right on top of his withers, does not fit him. I have a Courts that I ride my mare in (not Sharon Camarillo) that I put on him and it fits him decent, but it is a 7" gullet (or supposed to be) with supposed to be FQHB. Is it the flare of the bars or why does the Courts, with the wider bars/gullet fit him and not the narrower Double J?
But to try to avoid more confusion, I thought a flex tree or a treeless would help, but am confused as to whether the wide tree or the narrow tree for him. I did a carboard cutout for his withers, and it "shows" he should be a semi-qh bars. He also has good sized shoulders, but is fairly narrow the whole way around. I've asked Meleta about it, and she has given me a little bit of an idea, but I don't have very good pictures to show her yet. Thanks in advance! |

Good luck on your saddle shopping. I have been threw lots for my one gelding and finally found what I needed for him with a Caldwell. |

Location: North Dakota | Depends on the saddle. Some semi bars will fit "wider" than full bars, because of how much flare they have. There isn't a standard when it comes to semi and full, and there isn't a standard on gullet sizes. Two saddles can have the exact same gullet size, but fit completely different if they have different angles. So it's hard to say that if the Double J was too small and the Courts fit, if you should go with a narrow or wide on the treeless or flex tree ..... because there isnt' a standard!
I use a Circle Y Flex2 WIDE tree on both of my horses, including my 4-year-old (who I fear is going to eventually grow out of it!). But they are both beefy-type quarter horses.
Meleta's regular saddle fit wonderfully on my Red but I myself just couldn't get used to the flatter seat. Really nice saddle though! She'll be able to tell you if her saddles might work for you. |

| I would be looking at used saddles made early 2000's as it seems most saddles in that era were made for narrow horses.
Caldwell tg
Sloan b1 possibly b2
Kelly kaminski barrel saddle possibly even the wide made by circle y (I find these saddles very narrow)
Triple creek
Lynn Mckenzie regular made by double j this is supposed to be her narrowest
My young colts I have a Sharon Camarillo, a billy cook and an old Marlene Edelman and I can fit most. |
