I know it's simple math but as far as feeding goes, does feeding a feed with 10 percent fat vs 12.9 really make a difference? My colt really stays filled out on ultium That's 12.9 but makes him hot. I currently have him on a 10 percent feed. He is calmer on this feed but tends to slim down on it opinions?

As to the math, adding 29% more fat in one part of the concentrate part of the diet over a 10% fat product depends on how much of that you feed, what the fat source is, and what the rest of the diet is. Sorry, not a simple answer. Horses use natural source vegetable fat very well because it is in all roughage at low levels and their body sees it as food and therefor can easily digest it. Since it has 2.25 times the calories of protein or NSC, it provides more concentrated nutrition that either. There are a lot of pretty good higher fat products, but they are not a cure all. It is still about using a proper complete diet.

I think you have to look at the quality of the fat content and the overall calorie content of the feed rather than just looking at the fat content itself.

Sometimes a lower fat with higher fiber can keep the weight on one even with the lower fat content. It just depends on the individual horse and the quality of the feed ingredients too.

Thanks! I really liked pro force fuel by nutrena but not with the ionophore scare. I might pick up a bag of ultium and give it as a supplement.
