I have three older horses. 23 and 24-years old. I'm having problems with all their feet.

The one I was going to ride, lost a shoe. He doesn't have much hoof wall. He's never had much hoof wall, has flat soles and is tenderfooted. He loses shoes a lot. The farrier put it back on. Then we had two days of rain and I didn't look at him. When I pulled him out, he was lame. I assumed it was an abscess after having that rain. The farrier said she thought he foundered. I was surprised. I saw no reason for him to founder. I told the farrier to pull his shoes until I figure out what's going on. I didn't want to keep calling her if he was going to keep losing shoes. After she pulled the shoes, he was sound.

But now she thinks he has white line disease. He may. His hoof walls are crumbling and chipping. They look like they're shredding. All four feet. I looked at my other two. Their feet look the same. Can all three horses have white line disease in all four feet? I've had these three horses for 22 years. The other two have been barefoot for years because I don't ride them. They are all sound. I clean their feet regularly. They are eating the same grain they've been eating for 22 years. It's not the grain. They have been in the same field, about 6 acres, for ten years. It's grass and weeds. They are not in mud. With the weather we've been getting lately, sometimes it's dry and sometimes it's wet but nothing crazy here. They have shelters to go into whenever they want. The grass is wet with dew every morning. I am giving them Nanric 100 (I believe that's the strongest biotin you can get on the market, plus it has other vitamins and minerals good for the feet). They all look great. No one can believe their age. Nice and glossy. But their feet! The only change I've made in the last few months is I stopped putting oil in their feed. I had done that for years and just got tired of it, figured, ah, it's a waste of time. They haven't had oil since February. It can't be the oil, can it? What can it be? Could it be old age? I know my hair and nails are not the same.... ideas?

That's very nice of you to ask Jake. Yes, we are fine. It just grazed us.

It most definitely could be white line and usually if 1 has it its not uncommon for the others who share the same pasture or stalls to pick it up too. From my experience.  All 3 of my horses have a touch of it this year and we've NEVER had it before. My farrier dug out all of it, thankfully caught pretty early. He also told me he's seen more WLD this year than ever before. When my horses had it he told me it was important to keep them dry as possible and clean so the air could kill off the bacteria I also applied a topical twice a day on the worst one. Thankfully we are over the hump and hoof is growing back strong. My horses are kept in stalls with long sandy runs that are dry so that was helpful. I also used white lightening topical.

Sounds like they're just too wet.  I'm having the same issue in Florida.

Oh boy, I never imagined all of them could have it. I will get that White Lightning and try that.

Must be from the dew on the grass. I'll have to think about how to get around that.
