| So if you had a young one and was trying to decide to start his training more as a rope horse and then barrel horse or vise versa... what would you do??? |

| Both simultaneously! It is nice to alternate between the two, so they get a lot of riding, but don't get burned out on the same event. I also like to play around with poles, teaches a lot of basic skills that can be transferred to barrels and it never hurts the resale value to be at least started in multiple events! |

Location: Always on call..... | Roping then barrels.
After being a rope horse for awhile they are more than happy to go work barrels :-).

Location: Texas | I always start mine on the pattern and get them going, maybe haul to some little jackpots and kinda let them cruz the pattern , then we start them in the rope pen and completely get away from the barrels and let their mind mature before I put them back on the barrels. Works awesome for me |

| I like mine to be started roping first. Especially the heel end. They have to learn to rate the corner and then get their butts in the ground. I love my mare that was a heel horse first. And whenever I can, I get my son to rope on her. Even if it is just the heel a matic.. |

| Both but if you really want to choose just one first, I would say roping. It teaches them patience but also don't hesitate to start them on the pattern and get them loping correct circles and STRAIGHT lines, also haul them with to everything! Jackpot ropings, barrelraces, playdays, dressage shows :P |

| My good horse went to the roping pen first! If I had to pick one I would say roping first, but we have done both at the same time and had good results. |

Location: Arkansas | I can tell a lot about a horse and how it uses its body by watching it being roped on; how the horse can rate a steer, make a corner or face, etcs. However, I generally try to cool them out walking the pattern or light pattern work making the barrels a happy place. I think it helps their mind. As they become more finished in the roping pen, then the time on the barrel pattern increases. If they are getting hauled to ropings as well, it *really* helps with seasoning and spooking.ETA: ropers generally neglect loping to the right or using the right side so if you do rope first be mindful of that.
