My Heart Be Happy Posts: 9159 Location: Arkansas	Some friends of ours just told me that their mare has a bacterial infection in all four hooves. One of the front hooves is so bad and shelly that it is breaking off in chunks. They were told by farrier to use farm grade formaldehyde. . . . They asked me where to get it---I'm at a loss cause I've never heard of a situation like this. I believe I read on here about formaldehyde being used to toughen their soles?? Can anyone help me with info please.

Lived to tell about it and will never do it again Posts: 5409	I have used it to toughen the soles, I used to get it at the drug store but don't think you can any more. Your Vet should be able to order it for you by the gallon and it isn't or at least wasn't expensive the last time I got it. Vets use it to "fix" tissue samples being sent off for testing.

Take a Picture Posts: 12841	When I taught Jr high science in the 1980's, everything that I read emphasized that formaldehyde was a strong carcinagin. You could not buy it from science suppliers. I do not think that you can buy it anywhere. Does the horse have seedy toe? I have a horse that has this and the vet oversees my farrier when he shoes my horse. This will never go away and according to my vet, it is fairly serious. It affects the laminae and can be just in the lower part or more severe and go up nearly to the coronet band. I have a terrible time keeping mine sound enough to ride. The best fix is trimming every 4 weeks religiously. Hope that helps.

Not sure why, but. . . .They thought everything was good now and were getting shoes put on for an upcoming rodeo parade. The farrier trimmed but said no way would he put shoes on with her feet like this. I don't even know if a vet has seen her or not. . . The farrier is the same one I use and I trust him completely. But I think there may be more going on and a vet needs to be involved. What do y'all think? (If she was one of mine that would have already happened.) Maybe they're trying to save money by just having Tom (farrier) look at her. I appreciate everyone helping.

Take a Picture Posts: 12841	My farrier just put shoes on mine Wed. He said she had àn abscess. She has been limping for 4 or 5 days. He said that she is just going to get them and not much we could do about it. He does put the nails in pretty high. I make sure that he gets out here every 4 weeks. He is pretty good about letting me know when he is coming.

Someone there might give you a small pint or so it doesn't take much to paint the soles. I used to get it from my Dad who was a Funeral Director/mortician, so I had no problems getting a small amount.

I'm a Cry Baby Posts: 3781 Location: n.c.	Ditto to the above. Get ours from the funeral home. Have a vet in the area that his prescription for white line includes formaldehyde in the formula. Just make sure you use gloves when using it. And don't get it on any live tissue.

The Advice Guru Posts: 6419	Vets can also get medical grade formaldehyde Also iodine works just as well I use 16% iodine, I soak a breast pad then vet wrap it to the foot and change when needed. You will need to do this for approx a month and it is actually beneficial to do this a week before the vet as iodine will travel into the foot and it lights up like a Christmas tree and allows the vet to see what is going on in the foot
