Location: Las Vegas, NV | Hi, I'm looking for tips on putting weight on my 4 year old in training. I want to bulk him up as much as I can and he works hard. I have access to Purina and Triple Crown feeds. I don't want to make him hot and his energy level is good, just a little thin. It's been over 105 here, so I worry about starch. Any recomendations? I have been feeding Omolene 200 and whole oats, maybe I should just increase that? Thanks! |

Location: Jersey Girl | Good quality free choice hay or pasture.
Grain wise I would do TC. Something that has a low NSC value but high fat. I would also supplement with rice bran pellets. |

| Free choice pasture or hay and a good quality, if his energy is up you're not going to want to go too high on the fat level of his feed. I have a friend who just put her horse on the Purina Impact and had really good and immediate results. Triple Crown feeds are excellent feeds too, though, I think you'll do good with either...provided he's on a good worming program. |

Location: Phoenix | Is Renew Gold an option? My horse is on a 1/2 lb of Renew Gold, grass hay and alfalfa and he is fat as a tick! Low starch too. |

| Cool Calories is an awesome product. I use it on my performance halter horse to beef her up. It will NOT make them hot, and it really puts weight on one. All of my horses in training get it, and it just keeps them looking awesome. |

Location: South of Canada and North of Mexico | My 30 yr old gelding is on TC Complete, he no longer eats much grass or hay as he balls it up, he looks great. He gets 8lbs a day. I also few it to a pony I picked up in Dec, she worked up to 8lbs a day as well and is now on 3.5lbs a day. She is older as well but can still eat hay and grass. |

Then if after a couple weeks you do not see a difference add rice bran, 1-2# a day will do the trick. Any vitamin/mineral supplement?? Salt is very important to horses when it's hot. Purina amplify is a good additive but start slow as it can sometimes make one a little flighty.
Make sure you're not dealing with ulcers-as a 4 year old in training they could be pretty susceptible, because as I imagine you're creating a "work ethic" in that horse and that is stressful for the horse. BUT with all that said, I think you need to up your current feed and see if that helps. Maybe even add a little grass hay so he always has something to chew on. |

| I like Purina Enrich or Amplify added to your regular feeding routine. |

Location: Las Vegas, NV | Thanks everyone, I was considering Ultium, any opinions as to how it compares to Strategy? Also, what about flaxseed oil...will they get hot on that? |
