Ditto could be either one of these, but I'm thinking that its strangles, but pigeon fever is very possible. I have never dealt with strangles thank goodness but I have with pigeon fever, nasty stuff.

Your horse evidently had a case of strangles with the spot that burst and drained between his jaws which is the normal location for strangles to appear.

The treatment for strangles as long as the horse is eating and drinking is doing nothing since it is a virus and horses immune attack system and running a fever is the only thing that can attack a virus due to the protective protein shell a virus has as protection.

Giving a horse an antibiotic that has strangles is a major NO - NO ... it can drive the strangles internally to other lymph glands and create bastard strangles which may be your situation. .. if so expect this lump to burst and start draining and pay attention to areas in the poll area, along rib cage and on buttocks.

It is time to consult a vet and decide if it is bastard strangles and if to start a major high dosage rate of specific antibiotics attempting to stop its progression.

OR .. if the lump is an abscess at your injection site or directly below it due to poorly given shot that allowed germs or antibiotics to get under the skin rather than deep into the muscle tissue ...

Good luck ... hoping it is not bastard strangles ...

I have to clarify strangles is not a virus, it is a bacteria from either the strep or staph family I can recall and don't have my book with me.

You can give penicillin as per vet consult once it has burst, I had strangles go through my herd a few years ago and had a few we gave penicillin to to speed up the healing process. By speeding up the healing process I was able to contain the strangles within a week.

To the op

The part that makes me go hmmm about strangles is generally they will not burst open in 2 different places, this makes me think pigeon fever, a vet would have to culture for a diagnosis which if you have a good repor with your vet he may let you culture it yourself wash the site first then rotate the swab in the wound for 15 seconds

We had a horse that we thought had strangles, but it ended up just being a bad abscess that busted, I recommend calling your vet asap and they can diagnose a lot better than people over the internet.
