There's a gal at my barn and she is my trail riding buddy. Her sister is dying from brain cancer and it looks like it's the end. She's leaving for a week to go say goodbye and I wanted to get her something for when she comes back. I of course will be taking care of her horse and turning it out while she's gone that goes without question; I want to get her something nice for when she comes back just to show my sympathy. You guys have any ideas?

If she's traveling … a gift card for food or fuel … to make certain she eats!

ETA: and a card that tells her you will take good care of her horse while she is away.

This is a wonderful idea! As are home cooked meals...'soul food' that just makes you feel better.

I'd also say if no one would be home, could you get her mail for her each day and pick up the paper out of the yard? Its not a gift and It's a small thing, but one less thing she has to worry about while she's away

Do you know anything about her sister? My niece died from a brain tumor. My niece was CRAZY about cats, I gave my sister a charm bracelet full of cats and I don't think she has taken it off in 3 years. Another relative pulled pictures off of FB and made a memory book. Understandably, people are unsure what to say beyond expressing their sympathy but it was my experience that my sister loved to be asked about Anne. Ask her to tell you about her, she will like to take about it, ask her what special memories she has and give her a big hug. Prayers for her loss, it is so difficult. And yes, coming home to a clean house with prepared meals, no worries will also mean the world to her as she mourns her sister.

I have found this to be true for so many people.  They want to remember them and not act like they are no longer here.  I hate to hear about all the cancer that is wreaking havoc on everyone's lives.   You are a great friend to her and all the ideas are fantastic that other BB's have suggested.

What ever you get her she will appreciate it, that and being there when she needs you.
My father passed from brain cancer and my own husband (at the time) wasn't there for me at all.   I had several close members in my family die with in months of each other and he was not there for me at all on any of them.  We divorced that year as well.
Just having someone to hug and cry on their shoulder is a help.  You don't have to say anything, just be there.

I saw an advertisement for a site called fractureme. It had a cool way of printing pictures which are on glass. I will see if I can find a link for you. It would be a very lasting gift.

What a thoughtful friend you are, and I agree with what others have posted as far as ideas.

I might get her a saddle cross with her sisters name on it.  She's been on the hunt for a purple head stall and I would make it purple croc or something and her sister's name....now I just have to remember her sister's name!  :/
