My 7 year old mare has foundered in her right front foot. When I notived her lame thought it was a abscess but farrier said she was trying to founder so that day I took her up and had her xrayed sure enough she had slighted rotated. Started her on Viagra the next day and ordered soft rides changed feed took her off pasture. Within 4 days she was alomst sound week later super sound. Now weeks later had her rechecked and well she has rotated even worse (Monday) vet said to keep doing what I was doing which wasn't much was legging her back up still stalled I did let her out for a few hours a day. Now Friday her sole has dropped. Now she's lame again. Anyone else had the same issue that can give me some postive stories or ideas that can help me ? I can't post pictures on here but can email them.

Never heard of Viagra.

Had great success with stall rest for a month

Banamine every 12 hrs till no pedal pulse was felt, generally around 2 weeks for mine mine were weaned off slowly

This is after we found out why they were foundering, had one with septic laminitis, one concussion laminitis, one gi bleed caused laminitis.

The first two came back as competitive 1d horses, the last one is a pasture per.

I wouldn't be riding, confining in small stall, I would be icing the feet, banamine, soft rides are good, but they also keep the heat in

vets(2) and farrier said NO icing her her feet because her sole is already so thin or would ale her hoof soft.
Was only riding her because we thought she was in the clear she hadn't rotated much at all.

Viagra works better than ace. Helps get the blood flowing really good to their feet.

She's on complete stall rest , hoof supplements , soft rides ( which have probably been her saving grace).

It is really common for people to X-ray right away and see a little rotation, only to come back a month later and see much more. Your vet should have explained that you were not out of the woods because of the early xray not being that severe. Give me a call and I can help with your diet, probably help you identify what happened. 530-934-9300.

There are other ways to ice a foot then plain ice that will not have any impact on the sole

Ice boots

Game ready set on low pressure.

I would be asking the vet about an antiinflammatory, as you have a vasodilator, but nothing to stop the inflammatory pathways, or anything to suppress the endotoxins release.

2 vets really doesn't mean anything unless they are current on the literature current practices, and have current experience in the field. If this is not their speciality find someone who is, horses who start rotating are hard to stop once they start dropping, I have a hay burner that has 10k in vet bills sloughed off both front feet from founder and when she is not abscessing she is pasture sound, she foundered from a gi bleed.

1- vet is fairly new out of school and works with his dad that's been a vet for 20years+ and the 2- vet is one of the best lameness vets around. He's out of Tx and travels to is in Alabama. Dr Ford.

A lamness vet and a vet specializing in founder are different unless the lamness vet has dealt a lot with founder. You need to ask the vet where they are getting their info, is it current, have them show you the literature, also ask them if they have dealt with this on a regular basis, if they cannot do the above find someone else.

You also need to do your own research and be able to understand what the vet is doing and why.

There are special pads you can put under the shoes, as while a horse is actively foundering you want them to walk on the sole not the hoof wall.

There is one university and I can't think of the name that specializes on founder, you may want to speak to them.

Try not to haul your horse as the trailer ride can also cause more rotation.

Try and keep the horse as stress free as possible, you may need to get her a companion, don't be trimming her feet for awhile unless absolutely necessary then only trim the foot to where the coffin bone lays (most farriers are not good at this you may need to find one who has dealt with lamanitic horses)

Take your horse off of all sugars only hay

Test for cushings as this can cause founder

Has your horse had any dex lately as this will cause horses to founder, you need to find the reason

Magic cushion will help draw the inflammation out of the feet

And lastly start giving your horse BEER the most current research is showing beer is good for lamanitic/foundered horses, my vet gives his 36 yr old Cushing stud 6 beer each day and he looks great for his age and is much more comfortable. (He becomes a mean drunk at 7 seriously)

Ice with water and salt. The longer the better. Banamine. No grain, grass hay is best and let some weight come off. So the weight isnt squashing the laminae. Medicine boots would be great for this as they will hold the water and ice. Trim every 4 weeks.
