Ok, so a week or so ago I posted about my gelding who is not doing well with 24/7 turnout. I got some great suggestions but I really think he just isn't cut out for outdoor living, at least not in the Louisiana summer. He had developed rain rot a while back and I treated it, got it healed up. Fine. Well, last week we had some higher temps and I guess that's what did it... His hair still hasn't grown back completely and he burnt. Poor thing he feels terrible. It's been raining almost nonstop the past 2 days so it was pointless to put anything on it.
But yesterday my husband spent the day rigging up a makeshift stall in the dairy barn. No it isn't perfect but this horse has got to get out of the sun. It's about 10'x15' on concrete, but we put heavy mats and thick shavings down. He'll be in there during the day.
I cold hosed him this morning and he let me know it hurts. :(
What can I put on it to help give him some relief and allow it to heal? I don't want to just slap anything on a burn.
I imagine he's ticked off pacing his stall right now bc his buddies are out in the field, but it's for his own good!

I'd imagine Aloe vera would work the same for a horse. Maybe try some of that. I also heard white vingar helps with sunburns....try that too.

Keep him up during the day.  I like Silvadine ointment and have used Desitin in the past.  Desitin is for diaper rash and should help even in the rain.  Something like Neosporin with lidocaine in it might help to take the sting out initially.

our guys live in during the day and go out at night...

Desitin mixed with triple antibiotic cream will work wonders for healing...

going forward..if you cant turn out at night slather him in the highest level spf sun screen you can find..it works on horses too.

He would normally be in during the day with a fan on him. But I recently got married and moved. So he moved too. We don't have a barn, everything else does perfectly fine being out all the time. Except him. Like I said, we made him a stall I just hope he stays in the thing lol. It's not the most sturdy stall I've ever seen but I'm desperate to keep him in the shade. The dairy barn is also about 20 degrees cooler. Maybe next summer I'll have a real horse barn and won't have this problem again. I hate to bring him back to my mom's bc we don't live close enough for me to ride every day. Which poor thing is so back sore right now I doubt I get to ride for a week at least.
Thank y'all for the suggestions, I'm going to dig and see what I have that might work.

Ok I found a cortisone ointment lying around and used what was left in the tube. I'm about to make a run to town and see what I can find. When I bought him 5 years ago he looked horrible like this and I blamed it on lack of care. Now I know, he just is sensitive aparently.
If our makeshift stall doesn't work out he will just have to go back to my mom's. I feel so bad for him!! :(

My horses are out all day and never had a sunburn, does your horse have any shade to get under during the heat of the day? My horses do but they hardley get under the trees when I would think they should.
What color is your horse? Any pictures of him?

Yes they can get under a few trees along the fence line. There are 12 other horses on the place that are perfectly fine. He is the I my one that got rain rot, and the only one to burn. He's a sorrel. He sweats more than any of the others also. I have been hosing him off every evening to wash the sweat off, except the past few days bc we've gotten thunderstorms every evening. I bought some baby cream and aloe. I plan to use the baby cream where it's burnt the worst, and the aloe where it's just pink, like on his face.

I guess that's it. He's so pitiful right now. :(
He isn't happy but he'll be spending his days alone in the barn from now on and go out at night. Hopefully he decided to stop pacing at some point, I gave him some soaked alfalfa a couple times to get him to stop but I had to leave for work. If he keeps up the pacing all week I'll send him to my mom's where he can have a buddy next to him.

Are you sure that it is sunburn? I have lived in the same county for well over 50 years. (E TX) My horses have always been turned out 24/7. I have never had a horse sunburn. Many years ago I had a horse get photosensitization. Treatment was not as good as it is today and we lost him. I think you need to have a vet look at him.

I just read in the Merck Vet Manuel that there are more than one kind of photosensitization. One does have a poor outcome but I seriously doubt that your horse has that. Apparently not too common. You do need to consult a vet. I keep a fly sheet on one horse for flies but it definitely keeps the sun off.

Photosensitivity can also be a sign of liver distress.

There are many ways to interpret what you're seeing.   More than likely you are right....his skin is going to be very sensitive to light due to the rain rot.  Silvadene is what is used on human burn patients and will help heal any open skin as well.

We had a paint broodmare have a photosensitivity reaction once....not pretty.  The pasture she was in had just been mowed.  We can only guess that she rolled in the dewy grass and then when it got hot the next day the sun just cooked her.  She burned and sloughed all of her skin anywhere she was white...even her blaze.  We had to keep her and the baby in the barn during all daylight hours and she could only be out at night all sumer long.

I did have my friend look at him and take pictures to show her vet (she's a tech). We're pretty positive it's sunburn. As it's where he had previously lost the hair from the rain rot. His face isn't terrible but his blaze is pink.

Anyhow, today makes Day 3 out of the sun and he looks so much better. The burn itself is starting to heal, and he is not in near as much pain. He allowed me to hose him off this morning without trying to escape the hose. Of course he still looks pitiful, and somewhat comical slathered in his diaper rash cream. I used 2 tubes just this morning LOL.

I hung his fan this morning and he's in heaven. The first day he wanted so bad to be with his buddies outside, today he turns from his fan to look at them like, "Told ya she loves me most!"

He is going to look rough for a while. He lost a lot more hair this week. But he will stay in the barn all summer. Only turned out at night! For every summer now on...

Thank y'all for all of your suggestions, my boy is on his way to looking and feeling better!!
