I just bought a 12 yr old mare, has been at the same property with pervious owners sense she was a 6 yr old. WEll, i brought this mare home 4 days ago and she has turned into a NUT! she is a nervous wreck. she is turned out with 2 other horses and still is this way. i normally stall at night and you would think putting her in stall she was going to kill herself. she has crewed all around her stall, paces back and forth. AND SHE HAS NOT TOUCHED HER FEED. but will eat all her hay. so i assume her tummy was hurting. i was just wondering if anyone has had theses problems and what did y'all do to make your new horse more comfortable? i feel terrible because i personally know this mare and this isn't how she normally acts. i know its only been 4 days but she hasn't showed any signs of being more comfortable.

We bought a gelding just like this.  Put him on ulcer meds and sent him to our trainer.  He stayed 30 days and came back a new horse.  He stayed tied a lot till he learned to calm down.   Good luck

Search the forums for the ulcer posts and threads.
I agree with the above poster. Ulcer meds and 30days with a trainer.

I have one though not so bad. He is currently at the patience post.... Try some B1 paste/ulcer paste and get back to riding her. Give her a daily routine to count on.

I had one of those and tying made it worse. I fed Bentonite clay for a few days and she got a lot better.

A change of ownership can stress one out. I would give something to prevent ulcers or to calm one down. Animal element has In the Zone paste you can give 4 times a day just to relax her and reduce stress.

How long did you know this horse before purchasing? Do you know the owners well?

We had one do this when it went through DT's. It was scary. Scary enough we kept someone by his stall 24/7 and had the vet come out because we thought he was going to kill himself. The vet drew blood and it tested positive for am abundance of tranquilizers. The vet thinks the trainer who had the horse before had drugged him for so long he had become dependent on it.

Me personally would turn her out with the other two and let her settle in for more time.. even 2 or 3 weeks.. some horses get so stressed out.. my one mare paced and ran fence for a week , she had always been with me and my others .. give her time .. also did you find out her schedule? that would help to know her routine ..and follow it..

during the summer, they pull the shoes and turn there horses on. so she's just been turned out and stalled for feed and bad weather. no actual riding besides here and there. She was much calmer today but i did give her some ulcer meds and lots of alfalfa. I also tied her to the patience tree and she was fine, tied her to trailer and she was fine, i even rode her today and she rode off perfect. she still didn't bother with her feed this morning though. but did eat her hay. I'm just going to give her a week or two and just see if she adjusts better.

Is it the same feed she was eating at the other place? She could be a picky eater or the feed could be hurting her stomach.

I had a new guy come in. He came with some Purina Strategy. He would nibble a bit then pace and crib. He was kind of poor when i got him too. I switched him to what I feed right away along with starting him on THE Gastro PLUS and he's a whole new horse. He loves feed time now. Not a single sign of stomach issues. Complete change in attitude. I definitely think his stomach was bothering him when he got here.

My gray mare I love to pieces now was like that at first. I was ready to send her back! The other mare on my property was in heat and this mare was herd bound. It took time and Bee Calm paste. And riding. I also put her on Mare Magic, Renew Gold, and probiotics. She calmed right down. Now she's just on Renew and once a month I give pro biotics. She's her steady old self now.

Horses are just like people in that they get stressed out and anxious when meeting new people and horses etc...think about your first day of school or starting a new church or new job. Add the fact, they are a prey animal, everything is out to eat them. It may take a few weeks but she will be ok. Use a very kind tone when speaking to her and scratch when you can. Some horses calm down faster than others.

Its not the feed, the pervious owners feed the same thing. She was also stalled a lot at pervious owners too. i rode her for the first time yesterday and she rode off great! I had the farrier out this morning and we had to twitch her to get her to stand still, she was so nervous i thought we weren't going to get to finish.

She did eat all of her alfalfa though, but thats about it. and this mare is NOT missing no meals, she is by no means skinny, she is actually fat, very fat. I'm not worried about her loosing weight from not eating but more concerned about her not eating in general.
