Location: Probably On the Road to the Next Barrel Race! | My gray horse lost all mane and tail last September...been growing it out, last month she started itching again...vet gave her a potassium iodode ( I think I have that right) IV and lots of dex. It stopped it for about 3 weeks, now it's back. I've also used T-gel and selenium sulfide shampoo, and now vet has ordered an antihistamine. Any other ideas????? I can't go thru having a naked horse again :( |

Location: Aubrey, Texas | My grey horse has been rubbing the top of his tail- what I found best to use is OTC Cortisone 10 cream. Good luck- I feel your pain! |

Location: Opelousas, LA | My 3 yr old started rubbing out his mane earlier this spring. I started him on a flax/chia/DHA supplement called Profile from HorseTech right after he started rubbing and he quit rubbing his mane out after about two weeks. He still looks funky because now he has about two inches of new growth sticking straight up but he is not itching any more. The rest of his mane is still pretty short because he rubbed it all out last summer so this year is a huge improvement.

| A serious mane and tail rubber is suspect to overdosing on selenium due to supplements, feed and pasture rich in selenium ..
Make sure you worm with Quest in case there is a micro bug involved and reduce amount of selenium by using no supplements and changing to a low power cheap feed or whole oats. Adding a cup of whole flax seed will aid hair growth and boost immune system.
Also mix one ounce of strong iodine in a qt spray bottle of cooking corn oil.
Spray lightly on base of mane and tail to wet down the roots of hair and rub in with your finger ... selenium disrupts the process of hair renewal and oil ducts around the roots and it itches ... this will stop the itching. Wash out weekly with human hair shampoo since it will accumulate dust and dirt ...
A heavy overdose can also affect the body hair and you end up with a naked sun burned horse in the process of organ shutdowns ...
Healthy hair grows about 3/8 inch per month so it takes awhile to grow back to normal ..

What she said. Most of the time you won't have to do it thru the winter. |
