Yeah I would not pay to try a horse. That would turn me off right off the bat.

I really do not know if there is a way around it. Honestly, if someone is making the effort to come see my horse I don't consider them a tire kicker. I can't hold it against them if they choose not to buy, although I would be upset if they never had intentions of buying in the first place. To me, tire kickers are the people that call and email and SAY they are coming, and then don't show.. or, they just ask you a million of the same questions and then never do anything at all.

Are you hauling the horse to them to try?

I would mak sure they come to you, if you go to them they need to chip in on gas. They try your horse at the closest barrel race to your house.

Ive tried 4 horses in my life
1. was horribly misrepresented and very dissapointing
2. Was too much horse for me and not far enough along on the pattern for me at the time
3. Was lame
4. I bought

eta: I drove 2+ hours to try all of them.

This is interesting to hear from the sellers point of view. I had a very good year financially back a few years ago and was looking for a Bully Bullion horse. I live in Texas, traveled as far as Minneapolis to try a horse. I'm a Senior rider, I clock in the 2D/3D at medium/large races in Texas. I want to know does the horse buck or rear...oh no...I get on the horse in Minneapolis and what does he do..bucks and rears. I get on a great little gelding in Oklahoma who is 'patterned'....well, not sure what pattern, but green as a all get out.

I spent a ton of money just trying. I could have wired money for more a fairly decent sum of money and I didn't misrepresent my ability. However, sellers please be aware not all of you are perfect in your representation, and when I travel spending more than a few dollars in gas money/airline fares to see your horse, I want some honest representation. Do you clasify me as a 'tire kicker' some maybe, but I don't see it that way. So all of you that 'hate tire kicker' buyers also don't always lover sellers.

Just sayin'.

i really hate the term tire kicker. One thing that sellers don't realize is that some buyers do know more than you the seller or at least more than you think they do. Buyers come and try a horse and know that horse has issues that the seller is either lying about or are blissfully unaware of; instead of telling you flat out that you have been riding and are now selling a crippled up horse, they just kick the tires and tell you that they need to sell a horse before they can buy. Yes I have said this before because no one wants to talk about the elephant in the room. I have been on the property of sellers that were quite frank so full of themselves that i in no way intended to tell them about the problems just wanted to make a quick exit. i don't ride them however. usually they don't get out of the round pen before I kick a tire and get the hell out of there.

I usually never go look at a horse and not bring it home for me (my pasture is proof of that)... BUT I won't pay to test the horse out either if someone said that I would kindly decline and they would lose a serious buyer. That being said right now... I am in a search for a specific horse (Bombproof boyfriend safe 16+ hand stocky trail horse - he's big) and I will be dang sure testing this horse out... actually the SO will be too. People misrepresent horses all the time, and we have 1 I trusted a friend and bought already that doesn't fit. It's literally the longest search I have had to go through for a horse.

I'm sort of amazed at the amount of time people must have to burn! If I go to look at a horse, I am SERIOUS, I don't have time to fart around trying one I'm not really interested in. Some of these folks must have WAY more time on their hands than I do!

Maybe trying using phrases in your ad like, "not for beginners" or "needs advanced rider". I don't know if people that come to just try a horse that has no interest to buy are mainly beginners but that might be worth a try.

I feel like when your selling it just goes hand in hand to have a few people that just want a free ride.

Lolol wish that worked but nope. My current ad states something like this very boldly and I still get parents of kids and non advanced riders calling to test drive. Sadly ther are a lot of intermediate riders who think they are advanced.

Simple... Post this sign at the end of your driveway.. and when they arrive, walk out the door with a handgun in a holster on your hip and a shotgun on a sling over your shoulder.

kwanatha - 2015-08-08 2:27 PM Let us know if you figure it out. As a buyer, i would like to know how to weed out the sellers dumping their cripple dinks.

The BS goes both ways

You buy a horse with LOTS of videos of a period of time, as well as someone who is well known and has a good reputation. I want my horses to go on and do well! It helps my business when people are doing well with horses bought from me.... Also, I can tell pretty quick getting on ones back if they are cripple, i.e. different each direction, rough, don't hold leads well, don't want to work.....

If a serious buyer is coming to look at a prospect that we raised, I would gladly give them the contacts from our previous buyers list  and encourage them to contact some one for "the word".. And, since I raised the gelding or filly (and his dam and probably grand dam), I  feel an obligation to the prospect. I will have checked out the buyer before they get here and have an idea if the potential new home is good for all of us-Buyer, seller and horse.

I always put to good home only. Then ask them questions. I'm blunt and honest about my horses. It seems to be working, I've only had a few joy riders. Mostly on a pony I was selling.

I can't believe people have time to just **** around and run around the country to try horses out if they aren't serious!
I understand emailing or calling asking questions being a "tire kicker" but to actually go and ride or make runs on horses you aren't actually interested in or can't afford just blows my mind!

I had some people ask me to drive 2 hours for them to try my horse, I agreed as long as they paid the fuel. I pre paid for them exbs to be sure to get them. Of course, my horse did great with the girl.... They leave, without paying me for the fuel or exbs, and I never heard from them again. I even texted them about paying for the fuel.. nothing!! So rude! The last tire kickers I dealt with a few weeks ago, met at barrel race, they did several exbs on my horse (high priced horse!) went great, 1 second off the arena record, just cruising through and pulled up before timer...... They loved the horse. Set up time to try her again, cancelled, and then set up 2 more times we agreed upon and the cancelled!!?? Haven't heard from them. Such a waste of my horse, time and money.. I do not understand how people can be like that. It is so frustrating, and makes me want to require some earnest money, deposit or something to eliminate tire kickers wasting my time, MONEY and HORSE.
