I know this topic is beat to death, but I never really paid attention because I've never suspected my horse had them.

I *finally* found a finished horse! after 30 years of making them myself I think it's time lol! (A little backwards but ok.)
She came advertised as 'sulling up at the gate' but at our first race she spun, reared, and high speed backed. I eventually got her in with some help and she kicked butt. Middle of 2D on a night with an arena record set so I am super happy.
I've had her almost a week now. She's sucked up in the flanks and acting really nervous - she was super quiet and well mannered when I looked at her away from her home and up until I took her to that first race. She's 12 and has been stall kept and run a lot. So I started suspecting ulcers and asked the seller if she'd ever been treated. Yes, with Equi Sure. At least now I know where to start.
Anyone have experience with equi sure? I think she may have been ulcer free when I got her, and the stress of moving and a race with a new rider, and my moving her over to grass/alfalfa from straight alfalfa, along with no ulcer meds may have formed one. Poor girl.
I'm having fence buikt so in about 6 weeks she will have 6 acres of grass and trees to share with my other mare and a pony. I think that - and my lighter schedule for her - will help her a lot. What to do til then? Did I mention I just moved and don't have a vet here yet? I need to find one asap.

Your horse sounds a lot like mine. I also had a young mare showing signs of hind gut ulcers and an old mare showing the same signs. I treated them with different products.
Old mare- Succeed, it helped but I am not totally convinced.
Young mare- Ulcer mix from THE and she is doing great. I have since put her on THE Performance mix with ulcer prevent for maintenance. Since changing her feed program, her coat is losing the bleached look in the middle of 100 degree weather.
Gelding- put him on THE performance formula with ulcer prevent. Wasn't sure it was working so I ordered Cur-Ost stomach soother and Adapt. In the meantime I moved my horse to a new place and he acted really calm. But since I had received the Cur-Ost, I switched to it and he has not regressed.
I would not hesitate to use either THE or Cur-Ost.

Thank you. So there are cures and preventatives, which are two separate treatments, right?

Yes. I will have my gelding on his supplements for another 30-60 days. Then I contact Dr. Schell and we decide what to do next. With THE I did what my sister was told to do for her horse which was Ulcer meds and then for maintenance the ulcer prevent. Her horse has been on this for several years with no more occurances of ulcers and no more colic either.

I asked for help a while back and had a wonderful thread with lots of wisdon. Here is the link.

http://forums.barrelhorseworld.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=462394&posts=36

I ran a round of the compounded stuff through my mare and am now debating my follow-up plan.  I do believe the compounded stuff made a huge differance.

She is still not 100% normal but I think some of it is behavioral as she is waiting for the gut stab to hit her when I saddle up, etc.  But gained weight, color bloom, and soft eye when she is not scared/anxious. Good luck, I sure thought the ladies were a huge help on this thread.

Spend the money and do gastro guard!
That's one of the only products that actually heals the ulcers! You can also use sulcrafate along with it. (It actually sticks to the ulcers in the stomach and coats them and helps heal them) Once you've done that for a full 30 days you can switch to a preventive, like Neigh-Lox

Where did you move to? Someone may be able to give you some vet recommendations.

I am treating my mare for ulcers now. I did 5 full tubes of Gastrogard and didn't see any results. I switched to THE GastroPlus and within 3 days, I saw a result. I think with ulcer meds, it's trial and error... what works for one horse, doesn't for another. I do also have my mare on a low starch feed with grass hay.

I'm in North Fork, CA. The only other barrel racer I know up here (by Bass Lake) hauls down to Clovis for a vet. I can't even find a farrier who comes to my place. :-/
I'm willing to invest in my mare, I think she's pretty stinkin awesome and I really want to fix her. Since I just figured her issue out over the weekend I had the feed store in the next town over order some Ulcer Guard and I have Jailbreak and Formula 1 on order. She's on grass hay with alfalfa pellets (she could gain a little) and Renew Gold, which I'm thinking may be her best feed program.
Does it sound like I'm on the right track?

From what a gather, UlcerGard is more of a preventative and GastroGard is the treatment. Lots of folks on here use Renew Gold, it seems like a really nice product.

Maybe start a thread asking if anyone is located in your area? I know there are a few CA peeps on here.

Ditto on this!  Gastro Guard is the ONE and ONLY absolutely proven to cure ulcers treatment there is. It does what it claims.  It is pricey but you know it will get the job done....the others are spending money and hoping they do what they claim...when they don't, you still end up having to spend the money on Gastro Guard.  However, ulcers come back very easily and you need to be careful and use preventative measures to make sure they don't.

HorseMommy, I would encourage you to post your question on the equine section of the furm at www.secondvet.com.  Dr. Schell has helped me with critical issues my horse had when 4 other very competant vets were scratching their hed.  In this process, my horse's ulcer issues were also completely eliminated, which was very much an added bonus.  I would love to read Dr. Schell's response to the ulcer issues we have and how omeprazole and ranitidine affects the Ph in the hidgut.   He has enlightened me and educated me to so many things this year and finding Nouvelle Research and the team there has been a blessing to me and a miracle for my horse!

Ulcergard and Gastrogard are one and the same...no difference.

Go check out the recommendation from Herbie.  It'll do you as much good as anything once you get her gut healthy the rest of it falls into place.
