You would be wise to get a helmet. It is legal and they are way easier to keep on. However, Smith Brothers has hats on sale pretty often.

American Hats..... My.02.... I like a more classic looking hat. Make it unique with shape and crown as opposed to color and bling.

I would suggest going to a place that you can try the hats on and get them fitted to your face shape if need be.
Plus you probably want one that sits down on your head so it wont blow off during a run.

It is very difficult to buy one on the web or a catalog based off of brands and know that you will like it.

Go to a hat shop or western wear store so you can try them on. For competition I always went with a felt. I bought one that was a little snug. And then I pull it down so my ears are flopped over and it pops out to a dome. (Not pretty I agree) But I've NEVER lost a hat during a run. I never had luck with taping or bobby pinning one. Do what works for you, this works for me.

I LOVE my Charlie 1 horse hat, I have the Almost Famous one. It's flashy and I get a lot of comments. They're a little pricy but if you'll be wearing it all the time it's worth it. :)

National Ropers Supply has some pretty awesome hats, but really you'd be better suited to head to the western wear store and have an associate fit one for you. It's hard to order hats online and have them turn out right.
I'm not getting into the helmet/hat debate, but I've never worn a helmet. Just not for me, and a personal choice. You need to do what makes you feel the most comfortable!

My daughter does HS rodeo and one thing I learned quickly is you never know what type of footing your horse is going to run on. We just had our first rodeo of the season, 2 weeks ago, in a large venue & six horses went down over the weekend. I would strongly encourage getting a helmet. The are so light weight anymore and you don't have to worry about your hat flying off.

I high school rodeoed too and I just wanted something basic that fit my face well. I like a traditional look. I went to a Western Wear store, found a hat on sale that fit, got a stampede string, and was done. Wore that hat for three years and it saw some tough times. It was some off brand. I think I have a silverbelly Stetson I got on sale now and a Resistol. They are both a little nicer quality than my high school hat but I never felt bad about beating my HS hat up because it was cheap.
