Not sure why but the last couple times I rode my mare she has developed girth sores on both sides. I have never really had this problem before... I am currently using a Toklat wool fleece roper like this one but without elastic (Toklat Cinch). I have used this on her in the past with no problems. I am using a different saddle now that has a dropped rigging could that have anything to do with it?   Thanks

I started using the sensorflex fleece straight cinch from classic equine.  Valley Vet has them.  It's soft and really helps my cinchy mare and no sores whatsoever.
edited to say, just looked up the cinch you are using, shouldn't be rubbing, looks nice and soft...maybe someone else has an opinion, or maybe it's your saddle..

I've been using a classic equine alpaca cinch. Soft and stretchy

I have a alpaca mohair chinch but it left sores on my husbands horse once so I stopped using it. which it is too big for this mare so I can't try it on her. Thats why I started using the fleece girths thought they would be softer then rope. Wonder if it has anything to do with the saddle having a dropped rigging?? I have been using it for awhile maybe I need to clean it good...

Fleece will gall if it gets dirty and sweaty. They have to be cleaned and fluffed often.

Are you sure it is not girth itch? In that case you need to disinfect your cinch and treat he horse.

This was my thought as well.  Especially since you mentioned another horse that has sored too.

Β This was my thought as well. Β Especially since you mentioned another horse that has sored too.

Well The other horse was years ago with a different cinch. People on here were recommending I try a mohair girth. I have a mohair chinch but thats what gave my husband's horse a sore and so I stopped using it but still have it. Just havn't tried it on her since it had given my husbands horse a sore years ago.

But it wouldn't be a bad idea to clean and disinfect this girth to be careful.

Ditto this. My barn buddy has a pro choice fleece cinch and it sored up her horse pretty bad so she has to wash it often.

Professional's Choice makes girth where the fleece velcros on.  Very simple to take off and put thru the washing machine.

this is where I'd start ... it looks like a nice cinch. Woolite and water does wonders for this type of situation ....

My boyfriend has a gelding that has very sensitive skin and sores easily and he bought a Weaver Air Flex cinch. Worked wonders. He hasn't gotten galled or sore since.

I use fleece covers on mine after years of being puzzled. I have two horses that have the same problem they are my main mounts. I cant figure it out I've tried every girth no success!! I treat it like girth itch but nothing seems to help. I'm thinking it's got to be the size of my girth maybe I'm tightening too tight or my girth does fit I will be following this post ??

All cinches should be cleaned regularly.

Something else to think about is that the buckles may be pulling/chafing on the horse's hide?
