One of my 4 year olds had a bone chip removed cleanly from her front knee. Joint was clean, very easy removal arthoscopic. Question, what's the soonest anyone had a horse come back from this? She's 2 weeks and is becoming a handful hand walking. They said 6 weeks before light riding. She is moving the best she's ever moved.

well i mean if you had a chip of bone removed from your knee then have someone jump on your back a couple weeks later how would you feel? lol i would wait till you get the vet to give a go or no. she may be moving well but horse are pretty good actors, (they can conceal pain and discomfort) some horses dont. it just depends though. good luck and take it easy on her!

I didn't ride mine for 8 weeks, light riding for a couple of weeks before it got too intense.

Mine had a bone chip removed and she was out 10 weeks. My mare was ready sooner but the vet said to give a few extra weeks to be safe.

I think the general consensus is 90 days and then slow re-conditioning.  IMHO there are some things only time and nature can truly heal, so I would err on the side of caution if I was interested in the long term soundness of the horse.

Had both knees operated on and we waited 90 days before returning to work.

Follow the surgeon's instructions to the letter, no matter how much of a handful she becomes.  Sedate her to hand walk her if necessary.  There are so many people that I've spoken to recently who haven't had good outcomes, and it had nothing to do with the surgery itself....it was the rehab time!  Turning a horse out into a small pen and not riding it is not stall rest.

Ask your vet about follow up injections and doing a loading dose of Adequan.  These things can make a significant difference in the long term health of the joint.  Don't be in a hurry to get through the rehab...let her leg heal properly or you'll end up with a young broodmare in a hurry.
