After months of back and forth, a good friend of mine was able to repossess a once amazing athlete. He came back with his back ankle looking like this, and she's not sure what happened. They said first it was a rattle snake bite that took him out of commission, then he fell. Anyway, doesn't matter now, just looking for some help on how to get him back stood up and sound again! Thanks in advance.

After the swelling is down he may have to go swimming to get strength back in that leg. Have you xrayed it may have torn some ligaments. If bit by a rattler the poison killed off a lot of the tissue surrounding his ankle. Lots of vitamin C and E to help build the tissue back up. Have a blood test taken and see how he is.

No advice for the ankle, but I noticed a pretty drastic change in the growth on his hooves. Looks like there's a ridge where there was a change in new growth. What's up with that?

e.t.a. bad founder, maybe?

I would go with a tendon issue. Our friend had a mare break down just like that, a ligament injury. She ended up having our farrier work with our vet and they put a special shoe on her and gave her anti inflammatory's.

Looks like there is swelling up through the hock to me as well all the way down through the fetlock, cellulitis maybe?  Definitely run douwn through the ankle/fetlock but the swelling looks higher to me than just through the ankle.  .  I would suggest having her post this picture and question on www.secondvet.com and getting his opinion.  I truly believe he would be a huge asset in getting this horse back to the best he can be!

Take the horse to a qualified vet and have it ultrasounded, my guess is career ending damage

Thanks for all the great input. I was nice and only posted part of the picture...if you'd seen the rest, you'd want to turn the previous owner in! He's 22 and retired now, but of course she wants to bring him back to a normal horse like he was before. He'd supposedly been taken to the vet before she got him back over the weekend, and all they said is he had possible tendon damage but that it doesn't affect him. We can't believe anything we've heard, so I came here for more advice! It's always hard when you don't know the full story.

Looks like it could be degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis-(DSLD,) which is a career ending injury if it is. I hope the vet says its something else.
