We live about an hour from Vegas. Come the end of November you never know who might show up at a jackpot or roping.

There are tough horses everywhere these days, but there is certainly a large concentration of them in our area. I love that they are here, because it challenges me to get better and work harder. Besides, I LOVE watching those tough talented horses work. It's fun seeing them make those amazing runs... it gets you excited and pushes those competitive buttons! And if we weren't doing this to be competitive then we'd probably be sitting at home knitting a scarf. ;)

PS... Don't stay home just because it might be really tough. Challenge yourself to do YOUR best, no matter what level that is. It is the sheer joy of running down that alleyway and feeling that wind in your face and that power underneath you that makes this sport so much fun. It's the gamble of "will today be the day that it all comes together and I have that phenomenal run?" that keeps us going. You aren't competing against anyone but that timer when you run into that pen. It's all about you and your horse, it's personal. No one else hears your thoughts, sees your fears or feels the victory, but YOU. Enjoy it!

Always go run. How else are you ever going to be able to tell your grandkids that you beat so and so at a barrel race back in the day. Everybody hits barrels. They might and you might not.

I might think about this a little differently than everyone else. I had to change my way of thinking when I started rodeoing a little bit because I would get so intimidated by the PEOPLE that I was running against. I dont ever like the thought of being intimidated by a PERSON. The truth is if I run in there and beat Lindsay Sears because she is running a colt...I could care less. I dont look at the results and say "Wow, I outran 4 NFR girls today"....I look at the Horses names. A lot of these girls are running colts, new horses, green horses and futurity prospects...or outside horses.........when I beat Lisa on Louie and he doesnt trip and fall down then Ill brag. Other than that....those girls are just another entry fee...I want my horses to run with the top HORSES. I dont know where I heard it, but it stuck with me "Losers think about winners, Winners think about winning". I dont worry about ANYONE else when I show up somewhere...if I do I will totally sike myself out. BUT I do LOVE hearing a famous horse's name and watching and running against THE HORSE....

And I have to add so that I dont unintentionally sound like a brat...that no matter who is there or what horse is there...you should run against yourself. Against your personal clock and BE JUST AS PROUD OF THAT as you are outrunning anyone else.

Yup

Here in CO you will get a number of small "freebie" jackpots but you just have to be honest with yourself and know what times it takes to be a true 1d winning time. My daughter won a SMALL jackpot with a 2d time, she was happy because thats right where her horse is running now but also knows she still isnt going to beat any true 1d horses at this point.

G&BI you ARE one of the "toughs" and not just on one horse, either!  I love your style of riding, too, nice, smooth and quiet.

Thanks Kaycee! I just do my best to stay out of the way most of the time. These horses have been a true blessing for me. They challenge me daily and give me something to work towards. They are fun, but they are a lot of work too. It is an amazing feeling when it all comes together. I'd love to tell everyone that I have found the secret to making things work, but there really isn't any big secret. I'm just like everyone else out there. I work hard and leave the results up to God. There are no guarantees when you load up in that trailer. You just have to keep things in perspective and know that God has a plan. Before I run I always reach up and lay my hands on my horse's neck and thank God for the opportunity to be there. I ask for a hedge of protection around me and my horses and I ask for Angel wings beneath their feet, and that I may find favor. Win or lose, I know God has His hand on it, and that makes all the difference.

I second what Kaycee said above.....not only are you one of the toughs, but also a class act and a role model!  Thank you for sharing on this forum!!!!
