I have a friend that's looking at a Paint mare for sale. The mare is registered and they know her registered name. But the current owner was never given the papers when she bought her. My friend doesn't care either way but was curious if she could possibly get the papers somehow.

Unless the papers were transferred to the person that she bought her from, then you would have to go to the person who she is still registered under and have them sign a transfer.

This is why it is so important to have papers in hand as soon as you pay in full. We have had a few 'registered' horses who don't have papers because someone didn't get them when they paid for them, and then the old owner was on the run from the cops and....well as you can tell, it becomes a mess. haha

If the original owners did not give the papaers to the person that has the horse now they probably had a reason. You will probably never get the papers.

I have seen several horses advertised for sale and the ad says they have a copy of the papers. That is pretty much worthless. I check horses that I am interested in to see if the paperwork is in order, if not I move on to the next horse.

First you need to call APHA and find out who the last documented owner was. See if you can get the contact information, or do some handy google/Facebook searching. Then if the papers are no longer to be found you need an affadavit and a transfer signed by the current listed owner. Once this is done, you can get your papers. I've done it once, and in the process of possibly doing it again through AQHA

What kind of affidavit? What does it need to say? I am in this same situation. Every time I try to call AQHA and ask them if there is a way to get the papers I get a different answer....I've been trying to contact the last recorded owner with AQHA (which is still the breeder), but he apparently fell off the face of the earth. None of the contact info I googled was correct and all of the people who used to know him say they haven't seen him in years.
