is there a way to prevent it? I've never had rain rot before until I moved to MD, now one horse gets it every single winter.

how do you clear it up?

I've heard blue listerine (sp?) works on rain rot. I've used an iodine scrub and MTG in the past. I don't have much dealings with rain rot though. Can you blanket to prevent it?

unfortunately now that he has the beginning bumps I probably shouldn't, but since he seems to get it Mid-September every year I could always keep him covered for that time!

Is the salt a preventative? or is it something that will help him get through it?

we have one horse that gets it every year as well, his starts mid december.........so i did a lot of reading up on it....and the conclusion i have come to  is its a mineral deficiency ....specifically vit e .......so we feed him a supp with a lot of e in it and he was rain rot free last year.............and if he gets a bout of it we do a iodine scrub and rinse really well then mtg and keep him blanketed..one thing that makes rain rot a real pita is that it will spread, so we keep his brushs and blankets all separate.........good luck

Sounds like his immune system needs some help to work efficiently to me.  Depending on what he's eating, I would first move him to an alfalfa or alfalfa blend diet and the only grain I would give would be whole oats, and just enough to use as a medium for his supplement.  If he were mine I would start him on the Cur-OST Immune & Repair along with the Total Support to get his immune system functioning correclty and then eventually just keep him on the Total Support to maintain.

he's on an alfalfa orchard 50/50 mix(free choice) alfalfa cubes and 1.3 lbs of Triple crown complete with a drizzle of HealthyCoat in the morning. the grain is only because others in the barn get it and at feeding time both of mine will throw temper tantrums regardless of their great hay or how much they have waiting on them or sitting there.

I didn't understand it was an immune system thing! I had heard it before, but I also heard other really crazy opinions of what has.

Some of mine get it, and some don't. I don't think your going to prevent it, shy of keeping one stalled out of the weather. I do 3 home remedies at once, and never has failed to cure it. Scrub with orange antibacterial soap, rub in iodine, and soak with listerine.

It is bacterial. Synbiont will treat it well.
