| I would say the horse has the rabicano gene
Or else had damage done to the tail, ie horse bite and the hair is coming in white |

Location: KS | I have a solid chestnut mare who also has a coon tail ( white hairs at the top of the tail). Her sire and dam where both bays who were solid. Sometimes it just happens. I wouldn't worry. I think coon tails are pretty. |

That is so cool looking. My horse has a little of that as well. Not so much the stripes but a lot of white hairs mixed in at the top. I really noticed it when I braided his tail like a hunter. Tons of white. |

Location: CTX | Lol, not worried, just was curious about it. Here is his pedigree, no idea if someone has the rabico gene in there... It might just be from a bite, or him scrubbing his butt on something. He is a bit of a dork, but I still love everything about him. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/redmans+irish

Love it! I have a rabicano yearling but her coon tail isn't quite this pretty. Hoping it will get more defined as she gets older. My buckskin also has one but it's more of a grungy white color lol. To the OP, I've seen horses randomly do this and I'm not sure if there is an explanation. My chestnut mare has grown a few over the years. I've always just attributed it to age. |

| We have a JET black mare in that we've been working on getting healthy and the better conditioned she gets the more random white hairs she gets. I've found over the years it seems that some horses have a rabicano gene that only comes out once they are healthy...no joke. |

Location: Deep South | My filly displays more of her rabicano gene this particular time of year. I'm not sure why. Every fall though it becomes much more distinct, then fades as she gets her winter coat and doesn't come back in as noticeable until the next fall. |

Location: CTX | Well, he is only 6 so age should not be a factor yet. will keep an eye on it to see if it is only seasonal.... I know we call them smart-hairs when they show up in the manes, so I'll go with that for his tail also.
Love the coontail shown here!! |

It looks good in that pic but alas she has started to scratch her bum again and the tail doesn't look as nice. Deworming on a very regular basis but doesn't always help. |
