Location: California | So I have a 15 y/o maiden mare. I had a free breeding to a beautiful Andalusian stallion a few years ago, but she didn't take.
Another time maybe 1 year later, she was in crazy heat, so we tried with a paint stud on our ranch. Bred day one, skip a day, then she still showed heat, but was not interested in the stud at all. We assumed she took, but once again, nope.
I don't have a ton of money to spill into the vet, but I am curious to hear what others have done in this sort of situation. What were the main issues? How much did you spend to figure out the issue?
I would really LOVE a foal out of this mare, but I don't have much hope. & I know I haven't exactly "tried" for her. |

Location: West Texas | If it were me, I would take her to a good repro vet for a general reproductive exam. If nothing seems out of the ordinary, put her on a stallion for pasture breeding for 2 months. That would be your best bet for little expense.
Depending on her issue a good repro vet may be able to get her bred by AI. It could be fairly reasonable or quite expensive. She might not even be able to take. You never know.

Location: Oklahoma | Seeing that you are in California, I'm not sure off the top of my head if there are any stallions out that way that do pasture breeding. I agree with Tdove that pasture would be worth a try. My stallion settled 5 mares this year and we offered him via pasture breeding only. |

I'd say it would of been worth the expense to do prior to trying to breed the first couple times....IMO....not only is it beneficial to you mare (more then if she's a viable breeder) but also for the stallions health if you are doing live cover......it really leaves nothing else to consider, answers the if can or not...

Things to ask the vet to do
Ultrasound
Then ask if he believes it to be necessary to do a uterine culture, or if a flush is sufficient.
Also after you breed the mare, it is important to have her ultrasounded 16-21 days. The reason is your mare may have caught both times, but was too fertile and had twins 9/10 times a mare carrying twins will abort.
My mare who has never had problems ultrasounded with twins this year, we had to pinch one off |
