HELP-- it has been forever since I've started a baby LOL Let alone off the track. I'm buying a 2 yr old, limited outs, do not know much history. My other babies, I'd send them off their 3yr old year to be broke and then have the winters off. I'm not really wanting to ride this 2yr old I'm getting because I am in no hurry to futurity, so I want to let her develop. BUT what should I expect or exercises to do with her other than the basic ground manners, patience when tied, etc? Soft and supple is the main goal and I realize that will take some reprogramming since she's OTT.

My advice would be to give her time to decompress and relax, and just be a horse. She'll probably need lots of rate and help strengthening her body while she's on the right lead.

With an OTT I'd kick them out for a while. Treat for ulcers first, slowly wean them off all their high energy foods and then give them a few months to be a horse. Start back up in the spring with a lot of slow work.

Turn him out until next spring! Give him a chance to just be a horse. Pulling his race plates may cause him to be ouchy. Wean off high energy grains. They usually have hay in front of them 24/7. When we bring them home we put them in a small open with a loafing shed for a week or so bc they've been living in a stall for awhile and only brought out to bathe, gallop or race but just until they settle, then put them out to pasture. By small I mean a 20 x 20 pen. If you have the place do it in a spot he has a good view of everything that's going on at your place.
