 Don't Wanna Make This Awkward

Location: Texas | Okay so I posted about this a couple months ago, had my horse vetted and had everything fixed. He's been seen by two different vets. His hocks get sore. He stays on previcox and I couldn't feel it riding him that they were sore but he started not wanting to load in the trailer and getting hesitant of the alley. Since his recent injections he has started loading perfectly again and went in the alley perfectly with another rider, I've ran him 3 times since, 1st run he my friend walked in me, 2nd run I was by myself but he got a little hesitant, we had an exhibition, and just kind of worked in and out of the alley, everything was okay. 3rd run(yesterday) Had 3 exhibitions in the morning, went in perfect, warmed up perfect, had a 4 hour break came back to run, he wouldn't get close to the alley. planted his feet, wouldn't back in, but if someone came up and walked with him it was like nothing was wrong. once we actually get in the alley during a drag he would walk up and down perfectly like he hadn't just caused a scene. When he went in to run we just cruised the pattern but he worked perfectly, there is no way he is sore, he feels amazing when I ride him. I think he is just getting extremely nervous, I could feel his heart pounding and shaking just walking towards the alley, how do I get him over this ? I don't want to just deal with the fact that he wants someone to walk him in. He has never done this in his life. Do you think 3 runs just isn't enough yet and when he figures out he isn't hurting all will be good again? |

Location: In the Hills of Texas | Why are you still exhibitioning him? I would say that is part of your problem.
The Previxoc could be upsetting his stomach and because of stress it gets worse the longer he is in a stressful situation.
I would quit exhibitioning him and give him something like THE GastroPlus before you run him. I use to dose mine 30 to 60 minutes before I ran him. |

I usually try and exhibition him in new arenas because he does much better when he can go in and see the set up. Im running him again next weekend but he won't be exhibitioned.
I will look into the gastroplus thank you! |

Do you feed the GastoPlus daily or only on race days? |

| When I suspected my horse had ulcers I would dose daily. But after I felt like the ulcers were under control I only dosed the day of competition. It's been long enough ago since I used it, but I'm thinking I dosed around 60 minutes prior to my run. Another thing I did with my horse that would get nervous was to stay off of him as long as possible. I got him warmed up well then got off of him. I stayed away from the alley as well. I would hand-walk until a couple runners before me and then would get on. He would feed off of my nerves, but he would also work himself up in anticipation of the run. I also eased my way up to the alley, but did not fight him. I made him listen and not take off until I was ready for him to, but I did not fight him. Do whatever it takes to keep him calm and relaxed. And make sure you breathe! Someone once suggested to me to sing a little song because then you can't hyperventilate and it will help you stay relaxed. It sounds like he's feeding off of your nerves considering that he'll handle the alley fine until it's time to make a run. |

I use to dose my one gelding that would go off of his feed and would get bad at the gate as the race days went on, about 30 to 60 minutes before I ran him. He was a silent worrier and I would dose him before I put him in the trailer. Once my FWF gelding's ulcers were healed I only dosed him when I went somewhere or when a big storm was coming in.
My other gelding never hesitated at the gate and I would have to be careful as after he ran when he got by the gate he would try to go back in but he would start to go off of his feed. With him I would dose him at night as he would get too laid back if I dosed him before he ran.
You have to play around and see what works best for your horse. There are now a few other products on the market that will basically work the same way. I've never tried them as what I use works. |

I agree on the no exhibitions! My mare will NOT go in AND make a good run if I exhibition her first. I stay out of the arena at all if possible (even to warm up) and I have no issues whatsoever unless she is in heat. |
