Location: Phoenix | Noticed my horse licking the metal panels but didn't think anything of it because he loves food and anything that has taste. But today I caught him licking dirt so I want to find a loose mineral that I can leave out and he can take it as needed. Favorites? And do you offer certain minerals separately? I've seen some where you offer the B complex vitamins separate than the vitamin A & E....thoughts? Horse is currently on alfalfa hay, grass hay, and Renew Gold.

Location: Ohio | We like the ADM Grostrong Mineral and feed it free choice in the little black salt/mineral feeders. I just put plain stockmans salt in one side of the feeder and the GroStrong in the other side and they can access whichever they want. They eat it well and my horses look great on it.

| There is a very good discussion on second vet about this. Very rarely is it a mineral deficiency. It's a normal part of equine grazing behavior. |

I feed the same diet as you do, except I also add a Redmond Rock to the diet. They should have a source of salt, and while the Redmond salt is not really a high mineral support product, it is still 8 1/2% minerals other than salt. I really like that product, and so do my horses. They should get what they need considering the rest of your diet. As to Vitamins, you should be good there. |

Location: MT | Right now my horses are on Bonina Equine Freedom, it's a loose mineral for low selenium areas and is meant to be used with regular white salt.
California Trace is another really good one for low selenium areas.
Both are fairly expensive but I really believe you get what you pay for with mineral supplementation. Neither have much iron which is what you mainly get when you go with the cheaper minerals, it's why they are red colored. It costs more money to remove the iron and that is why most mineral leave it in. Most of our horses are overloaded on iron, they already get plenty of it from the hay, grass and supp's we are already feeding.

I don't believe they have made any changed. They still will not acknowledge they sold contaminated feed. I liked GroStrong too but will no longer buy any product from ADM. |

Forgot to mention he does have a Redmond rock salt block (probably because he rarely touches it). Do you feed the loose or the rock form?

May I ask how you found out about the Bonina feed?
I was looking for a more local alternative to California Trace since I would have to ship it in. There is a guy here who carries it so I can get it locally. When I compared it to CA Trace it was very similar. |

Thanks. Just wondering because I haven't heard of anyone around here using it (not saying it's bad or anything) and they are just down the road from my grandparents place. :)

I really like it. I was having a tough time finding a mineral without iron. It is kind of spendy though. |

Location: TN | We feed a complete mineral, cheap mineral/ salt and protein tubs free choice. I have noticed on occasion my girls dig out a spot usually in the orange clay dirt and lick each horse will wait and in turn like the same spot. I have seen this before . they seam to enjoy it |
