Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | We just came through the door after being gone ALL day, my husband was home until 2 pm however, and found our large dog covered in what appears to be hives. He is not in any distress, eating well, playful but very itchy. Don't have any clue what may have caused them. What is something safe I can give him to relieve the itch? |

| Benadryl or allergy tablet. We have given our lab generic allergy pill from Walmart with no side effects. |

Location: Around here somewhere... | FWIW My in-laws had a dog that developed hives. They switched him to non-grain dog food and he stopped having episodes. My SIL knew someone who had a dog with hives, they switched to giving their dog a raw meat diet and he quit having hives, and now my SIL gives all of her dogs a raw meat diet. I've never had a hivey dog, and always feed mine plain ol pedigree :) |

Location: ND--it snows, it floods, it snows, it floods | In the future Zyrtech works longer and faster then Benedryl according to our vet. We switched over on his advice and have had very good results. It's worked better since my hubby can't take Benedryl or so he says so now I just buy 1 allergy med for both. LOL |

I have learned from a friend of mine that Benadryl is one of those medications that you can give to an animal to help them in time of need. I have printed out the benadryl dosage chart here; http://www.anydogrescue.org/benadryl-for-dogs/ so that I always have the appropriate dosage with me in my purse. One time my my dogs was very itchy, so I gave it benadryl, he was fine for a day or two, but he kept itching, so I took him to the vet and I told her that I gave him Benadryl, and she said that a lot of her customers do if they can't get to the vet right away, but in long term you will want the appropriate medication. |
