Location: In The Snow, AZ | Recently we have been entertaining the thought of purchasing another horse. Really leaning towards an OTTB. Something that has either been restarted or has had a few months off and ready to be started again. Not looking to run right away as I have a finished horse. But something to take my time on. I can't seem to find many in Arizona. Most rescues have previously injured horses; bowed tendons, tears, etc. found a nice four year old, but just found out he had a bone chip. They say he's sound for hard work, but my research shows that arthritic changes are in the mix for him down the road.
Where would one start looking for a SOUND OTTB? What have been your experiences with working with one? I have an appendix now who was easy-peasy. But she was not a race horse. We have owned OTTBs in the past, but never for barrels. |

| LOVE, LOVE, LOVE mine.... I have 3 TB's but only 1 came from the track. They are much more athletic than most think. Would not trade mine for anything! :-) |

| There is a fb page called racehorse2sporthorse - they have been posting a crazy amount of horses from all over the country. Seem to be very honest. |

Location: Tumbleweed Capital of the World | I recently purchased on OTT QH. I'm not sure I want to keep him. He is so sweet and very smart, but I'm not sure I'm cut out to train him on barrels. I think they are either your cup of tea or they're not. I admire anyone who can make a successful barrel horse out of an ex-racehorse. Good luck to you in finding what you're looking for. They are out there! ?? |

Location: My perfect world bubble | I have my 2nd OTTB right now and could never say enough good things about him. I retired my hard knocking 15 yr old OTTB last year from upper level eventing and now he's a teenager's first horse. My guy now is just a 4 yr old, had 2 starts and had been turned out when I got him in April. He has the best work ethic of any horse I've ever had. A couple things about them - they can be quirky. Mine hates being groomed and saddled. They are usually hard keepers - even when you pump the hay and grain to them. A lot of them have crummy feet - be sure you have a good farrier or really look for good feet on one. They are usually workers and like having a job. I prefer them with no retraining - contrary to what people think they haven't been ruined in the mouth, don't pull or lug, and with proper training come on super fast! We event, I would look for something more of a sprinter for barrels. We have about 10 OTTBs at our barn right now and I wouldn't consider any of them to be good prospects for barrels. However - they are all 16.1+ and I've seen a lot of others built more to be a barrel horse than what we buy to jump. I'm currently looking for another by the same sire as my guy I like him so much. With a vetting I wouldn't hesitate to buy one site unseen. That racehorse to sporthorse site posts them from all over - the various FB pages are also good places to check. Good Luck in your search - I adore my guy more than words can say!!

Location: In The Snow, AZ | I really appreciate all the info and experiences! I guess it will just be a waiting game to find one. I have a friend who got one from Tina Volby whom I believe is with the sport horse website. And she absolutely loves her new little mare. My mare is awesome. But she's on the shorter side. She runs hard and is a quick little thing, but I'd really like to have something with long legs and a bigger stride for my next project. |

Do you mind sharing what your dislikes are about the horses? I'm just curious! :)

Location: In The Snow, AZ | Found this little bugger in need of a home. He's coming to my house tomorrow for a two week trial.
He is Jockey Club registered as New Mexico Cordy I believe he's only had 5 starts. 2 firsts and 1 second place. Finished 2nd in a Stakes race. 6 years old now. Hasn't been ridden in 1-1/2 years. He's a bit underweight/lean. 15.3 hands.
