You might try putting him in his bed before he falls asleep. If he is getting startled and woken up when you lay him down, that could be causing the problem.

  This is what we do with our 18 month old daughter. She gets a bottle and we put her in bed... and she goes to sleep. She loves to go to sleep though, half the time she tells us night night before we say anything about it and she beats us to her bedroom. We leave a night light on for her. I can not sleep with her in our bed, not saying she doesnt... but I do not get any sleep. If she wakes up in the middle of the night my husband goes and gets her and puts her in our bed. I do feel bad for her, I remember being scared and not being able to leave my room. Granted I was older but still. I don't like knowing that she is scared so we just go get her if she is screaming. It isn't often though that we have to go get her, usually she is sick.I think putting them in bed tired but still awake makes it easier when they wake up in the middle of the night. Not like oh crap, i blacked out, mom vanished, and here I am in the dark... alone.

Before all of this started I was putting him down while awake and he was doing great. I would rock him for about 5 minutes and then lay him down to sleep. When this started I thought maybe he just needed a little extra rocking and drowsy time before going down...nope...he has been completely and totally snoring asleep and as soon as his back hit the mattress he'd wake and start screaming.

Update: we have decided to get him a big boy bed this weekend where we can lay down with him until he falls asleep. He went to sleep with us on our bed last night and went right down and slept through the night. I work full time and live far from town so we are going to limp along until we can get to town on Saturday and purchase something.
