He is a deaf blue heeler. He is sweet and had always been kept on a chain. Friends got him and did not know he was deaf at the time. If anyone has any tips also with working with a deaf dog that would be great also. We are using ASL with him also. Wish I could post a pic. He has a lot of white with two black eye, speckled legs and a few bigger black spots on his back.

Well you know how the joke goes.... "What do you call a deaf dog?? ...doesn't matter because he won't come when called anyway..." ;)
But seriously, you are awesome for taking on this sweetie! My first catahoula was completely deaf. He was a fabulous dog to me and those he knew, knew his sign language very well. From what I've been told, dogs are actually easier to train with body language and hand ques than verbal ques. I had a shock collar that had a vibration setting that I used for my boy, that way when he was off leash I could buzz him and he would look to me for what ever hand signal I needed to give him. He was a really neat dog, the only thing was he was overly aggressive and protective. I had to take every precaution to keep any accidents from happening. He was never allowed loose with strangers. Catahoulas and Heelers are naturally protective breeds and when they lose one of their senses I believe they can perceive more things as threats, so keep that in mind. My guy was socialized very well from the time he was 6 weeks old but that still wasn't enough. The last thing that I noticed is he occasionally had issues with other dogs, he usually played too rough and wasn't ever able to hear a growl to know to back off.
Deaf dogs are a bit more of a challenge, but they are just as loving and probably more loyal because they rely on you for so much! Good luck with your new baby!

This! Great advice. Shock collar is almost a must just like other poster stated your yelling/calling will be falling on deaf ears. Have a family member with a deaf dog and everything this person suggested and discussed is spot on. Even Google lots of good training advice. Hardest part for my family member was dog getting outside of its boundries and couldn't hear you call it, shock collar fixed this.
