| I have a brood mare that foundered about 2 months ago. Long story but she was not fed what she was supposed to be. So it was caught pretty fast. She was iced, given ace every 6 hours to dilate the blood vessels, been on bute and in soft rides. she was getting so much better but relapsed this past week She looks worse this time than last. We are doing the same thing as last time but was wondering if any of you experts out there have and other recommendations. Thanks in advance! |

| No, the broad mares were being fed but the person feeding did pay attention that they all came up from the pasture and ate... well this one mare was eating for everyone.

| Banamine is better for founder then bute. This has to do with suppressing the endotoxins from being released in the hind gut.
For laminitic horses, my vet gave 5cc iv every 12 hours for a few weeks, even after symptoms subsided.
Do not trim while they are actively laminitic
Soft rides are wonderful, but watch out for thrush, I always placed iodine pads on their feet then into their Softrides or hoof boots, to prevent this
Take the horse off of all sugars, no whole oats, no alfalfa (too high of sugar content), no grass, keep on a grass hay, don't reintroduce for about 6 months for a year, as it takes this long for the foot to grow out.
Xray to have a visual where the coffin bone is, this will give you an idea.
I also put my horse on remission, it also helps with vasodilation high in nitric oxide

| I have only ever had one horse try to founder. I caught her walking, slapping her feet, heel then toe. Hauled to vet. He gave her Banamine and antihistamine and instructed me to stand her in ice water several times a day. We got lucky that I caught it early and she never did rotate. So now days if any of my horses eat more than they should or something they shouldn't I throw some antihistamine pills in their feed for a few days, and dose them with some Banamine if they are at all uncomfortable.

Location: Usually on my horse | Put her on Remission...... Get some chaste berry and put her on that as well. Grass hay....no green grass.....The Remission and chaste berry should get things in control within a week. She may have to stay on both of these supplements indefinitely. These supplements saved my pony. He is on them from April to November..... Good luck with your mare |
