I call BS, unless they had something underneath such as an ointment, then my guess the horse had a reaction.
The reasoning why I can't see a leg wrap cause scalding is
Small surface area where the blood flows in and out, therefore if the area gets too warm, the body will compensate and remove excess heat from the area via blood.
Yes there are ceramic fibres in the wrap which reflect heat back into the body, no external heating source, therefore the leg actually cannot be any warmer then their core temp.
To the op
I use bot quite regularly, even on horses who have never wore it prior, I will leave them on 24 hours and have had no negative result.
I have used knee, hock, quick wraps, and no bows.
I actually put bot blanket on three horses a few weeks ago under their winter blanket never pulled off for 48 hours, no adverse effects.
I however won't put any cooling gel, or warming gel under the wraps. I have put antibiotic ointment under if the horse has a wound.

Location: California | I have a horse that was "burned" by the hock wraps. He is very sensitive to ointments, and linaments and there are very few things I can put on him. He also has a non-sweating issue and in the summer if he doesn't say inside with a fan on 24/7 his hair falls out in patches around his chest and mane. It took me a long time to figure out everything that bothers him, but I pretty much can't put anything on him that makes him hot (physically or chemically). I don't even blanket him in the winter. When I run him I put polo wraps on literally the drag before he runs otherwise he will start pawing and stomping to get them off because his legs get hot. He rarely run between May-October because it's too hot for him. So he is a special case, but did have a bad reaction to the BOT hock wraps. After that I never dared tried any other product on him.

| I have never had a problem with my BOT sheet or saddle pad, but I never put anything under it, either. I do have a strange horse that can't tolerate PHT magnets, but can tolerate BOT. However my other horses have no problem with either product. I don't put anything under my PHT stuff either. | |

Location: CTX | I can't actually say anything on horses (yet), but I use BOT products myself. I have the fingerless gloves for my wrists and thumb, and wear them at night. Also have a back brace for my lower back, and I have used that days on end when I was hurting bad. And I know I never had any issues. So those horses that burned maybe really sensitive. I would just try it, but keep a close eye on him/her.
oh, and by the way, If anyone knows the sizing, I am asking a sheet for my horses for Christmas, just trying to figure out how they fit compared to Schneiders blankets.

As far as sizing goes, I have a 78 and an 81 BOT sheet, and the 81 is big enough that my gelding who fills an 84 winter blanket can wear it without looking homeless. The 78 almost fits him but leaves a little bit of butt cheek showing LOL. Poor guy would love a PHT sheet but I don't think they make one big enough! My 80 PHT is not nearly big enough for him.

These sure look like burns to me - no liniment or ointment used, just used them for longer than was recommended. Even if they aren't burns, I don't need my horses hocks looking like that just because I left them on for a little longer than was recommended.

Hungarian Midget Woman
Location: Midwest | The only issue I have had was with the old style hock wraps. My horse had a hock injury and one hock was larger than the other... the larger (ie swollen) hock got a pressure sore from the hock wrap being too tight and him laying down with them on.
I've never had any other issues with leaving these wraps on for extended periods of time and certainly have never seen any burned horses. My guess is that she possibly used something a day or too before and there was residue on the leg, or perhaps this horse had an allergic reaction to the material, or maybe that one just can't tolerate any heat at all... who knows.
I did not often leave the hock wraps on for extended periods but I left the quick wraps on pretty much anytime I wasn't riding at 3 day shows in cool weather and had no problems. In hot weather you need to use common sense but the products don't get THAT hot- it's not like it is a heating pad- they are more just slightly warm under the wraps.
So basically what I am saying is that horse that had issues is the only one I have heard of! They are good products. I no longer use them as I prefer poultice post runs, but I never had any issues with mine and they held up well. I did have one pair that ripped very early on and Dover Saddlery (retail brick and mortar store) happily exchanged them for a new pair. No issues with the new pair, and shoutout to Dover for the great customer service. I wish they carried western tack!

My gray horse wears an 81 winter blanket and I can use either the 78 or the 81 BOT sheet on him. The 81 BOT is a bit large on my bay who wears a 78 winter blanket. I like them to fit a little larger than some people so I would buy an 81 if I needed to replace either of mine.

How hot was it out when you used them?
I use one of the sheets a LOT - It might get left on for 48 hours at a time. I never use anything other than mineral ice under it. I've never had an issue?
