Ahhh I am at my wits end and feel so awful for my poor horse!

She is completely immersed in hives and treatment isn't helping (Dex and Antihistamines)

Just curious what regiment of Dex/Antihistamine's your vet(s) have prescribed for your horses

What Dex (concentration), did he inject or do oral? How long, etc.

We did Dex SP 4mg/mL - 10cc Oral, then 7cc, then 5cc

And Hydroxyzine 50mg at 2mg/kg so it was about 500mg or 10 pills mixed in her feed. but it's not helping.

Thoughts?

I treated the issue with my horse that was allergic to everything under the sun, and now she is eating the very things she was allergic to

My horse has the same issue for years with hives and had the same vet instructions as you.  Last year switched to Clariton - instead of hydroxodine  (I did 8 tabs twice daily) - vet said clients were having better success with Claritan and I only had to feed once a day instead of twice.  I started with 8 pills and by the end of the season was down to 2 once a day. Made a HUGE difference! Only had to do Dex once that whole summer! I bought a bunch on Amazon - generic version. I'll start giving 4 tabs in April and than back down to 2 tabs in May through the end of October.

Try to find out what is causing themΒ and remove it.. Β

This. Have you ran any allergy testing by chance? They have allergy shots that you can give once you find out what they are allergic too. As someone also stated could be feed, bug allergy, fly sprays can cause hives too. all kinds of things that's why testing really helps to narrow it down. I know pepole have also had luck with smooth run's breathe smooth.

Run an allergy test. Remove what is causing your problem.

Also - have you ruled out insects? We've had a super mild winter and I would rule out biting midges, hay mites, and other lil nasty bugs .... especially since you've been treating with no results at all.

Get allergy testing done. Once the testing is done the shots are once a month and not that expensive.

personally I would look at her diet..what is she getting and remove one thing at a time that may contribute to it... any supplement , etc..certain hays have weeds in them as well, is she rolling on a round bale , it can be many factors enviromently to...if she grazes on  new weeds in pastures can also cause hives so next step is keep her off it and see if they disappear, then id look at stall shavings , then Id look at grooming supplys.. then if it doesnt stop id do the test but its usually something pretty basic..

I spent $400 on 3 different tests - each year and funny sometimes new things would come up, bugs were a big one.  Like the above poster just wrote, I did change his whole feed regime, went off of sweet feed to RG, Silver Linings Imune and than the Clariton.  It worked, not complaining, and not saying it won't start up again, but I'm not changing anything till it does.  I love the fact I have way too much dex on hand now!

I was about to do allergy testing and my vet suddenly "cancelled" our appointment... It's a whole fiasco and way more than that, but essentially he is fired as my vet and leaving me to search for a new one...

For as big as Socal is, we sure do have crappy vets out here, but long story short, yes my plan is to have her allergy tested, but for now I need her treated. I talked to one of my ex's who is a vet (I was like DUH why didn't I talk to you before) and he gave me the info I needed too!

Thanks :)
