My vet says 40cc (20 on each side)....I usually don't have that big of a syringe....I give 35cc (hald on each side) for 7 days to a grown horse.

Penicillin is only give in IM.....

I prefer Tetracycline for 3 days, slow IV at 20cc diluted

I love SMZ's, they easily dissolve in water and are pasted orally. My vet just gives me a 1000 count bottle to carry around in case I need it.

You can usually get those at the feed store if you need them.

Interesting, my feedtores in the area cannot get them, they are prescription only ( Atleast in CA) but they do stock amoxicillin, Penicillin, etc. Very interesting.

I would consult your vet.

Penicillin is tricky as you have to get the blood levels up or it doesn't do anything.

Penicillin can also cause the same necrotizing faciatis as banamine. I had it happen to two horses.

In addition if you are using long acting at the beginning you are wasting your money. Vets in my area say it does not work and the chances of an infection from the injection are substantially higher then with regular.

If I have to use penicillin

I like to give the Iv 10000 units every 12 hours for a few days while I am giving the im administration as then I don't have to wait for three days for it to work.

My vet also recommends that I give 60 cc twice a day for 4 days if I am not doing Iv.

I am also instructed to give penicillin for min of 7 days but more often 14 especially for respiratory.

I first would be consulting my vet with vital signs temp and may pull some blood and have the local vet run it. As it may be vital the blood work can identify this then antibiotics won't work

I have to ask....are you saying to give Penicillin IV????????

Penicillin is available as an intravenous preparation (potassium penicillin); as a long-acting intramuscular form (procaine penicillin); and as an extended duration (approximately 48 hours) preparation (benzathine pencillin).

Therefore, the type of Penicillin the original poster has available to her should only be given in the muscle and IV injection of penicillin should only be done by the veterinarian. This is because any allergic reaction that develops is likely to be rapid and more severe requiring immediate treatment and usually results in death.
