Hi all!
I have a 4 yr old that's going on the pattern well, I broke him as a late 2 yr old and have done all his training. He has recently been getting his own style of turning- much different than my training, or so I thought lol. He is preferring it if I put lots of weight in my outside stirrup, then he shoots around the barrels. My problem- I feel like I'm Going to flat fall off trying to do this!
My question: has anyone else encountered this in their training and should I try to "re train" his turning or send him on to someone that can ride him better? Thanks everyone!!

there's I difference in wanting to fly around them and diving into them. If he's staying correct in his body position and is just incredibly snappy then I say learn how to ride it and enjoy the checks lol. If he's getting slopppy and wanting to dive into them and is just getting in a rush and that's why you feel he turns better with pressure in your outside stirrup then I feel it would need correcting. Video would help.

Correct turning requires you to sit down with your outside hip, and put pressure on your outside stirrup. This allows you to sit up through your turn and keep from tipping to the inside, causing your horse to follow you and shoulder the barrel.

Thanks for the input!!

It seems with him if you shift too late he will try to slice in there then rollback but if you do it at the right time, at the rate point (he's super ratey) then it's a snappy perfect turn. I'll try to get a video to post.

This isn't my first to train, he's just been the only one to develop a style I'm not adept at lol. I ride square and put weight in my outside stirrup to turn typically. But this horse wants a LOT of outside weight. He's still getting his bearings on going at a run but that is what it takes for him up snap around them.
