| Any tips out there to help prevent my mare from rating way too early. She's extremely ratey and always looking for the next turn. No matter how hard I ride her up the next barrel, sometimes she quits too early and it costs time obviously. I've heard blinders might help teach her to run more into the turns. Any opinions on that tip or any others out there? |

| All we really do is slow work. She's finished so she only makes 2-3 runs a week including shows during the season. We work a ton of collection and driving from the hind end because she is heavy on the shoulders. Part of her problem is that she can be lazy. Any other tips? |

| So your advice is to make more runs?? Do you think the blinders would worth a shot? I'm thinking they could bring her attention back to me and not so much on when she thinks she needs to start rating. |

I agree, breezing her might help free her up. |

I had one that I did to much slow work on and he got really settie and I had to work really hard to push past a barrel, so I breeze him a few times and stoped all the slow work and he started to work for me. I slow worked him maybe a few times during a months time but not every week. |

| I had one, ended up running him in a halter and he felt just free enough yet was broke enough not to run off. Anything but a halter and he would rate way to hard. Since I was winning the local association put a ban on me running in a halter saying it was a safety hazzard. So I added actual reins to my halter and put my name on the noseband with sharpie marker and called it my own hackamore. Nothing they could do. |

I think this as well. My horse is also super ratey and she was running well but of course I always want to be pushing to be better and I think I did too much slow work and burned her out. Now it's harder than ever to get her by the barrels and she's not really running. So she's on vacation from barrels for a few weeks. Just riding and keeping her in shape maybe practicing poles and some other things just once in awhile. My horse is very very smart though and gets bored rather quickly. |

Location: Benton City, WA | I have had several that have wanted to be too ratey. I personally have never used blinders.
I agree with what's been said about breezing one, just doing a fast sprint out in a field can really free them up and get them running harder in general. That might be ideal for a lazier horse. But not all horses that I've had that want to over rate are lazy. For the hotter ones, they're already really trying, so I wouldn't breeze them. With those, when you do work the pattern, I would not get in close to the barrels at all, or I would just trot by the barrel, keeping the horse's body straight toward the fence, and then stop and rest, doing the same past all of the barrels. And that's it for your slow work. That has helped mine a lot. Also be mindful of whether you may have too much bit in their mouth, and avoid over riding, as that can cause them to set up more.
Good luck!! |
