Getting a lot of mixed reviews on products containing Devils Claw. Some say its fine and safe as a pain and inflammation supplement and others say its hard on Kidneys and can cause ulcers. Anyone using products that contain Devils claw? Thanks!

I haven't used it for prolonged periods of time, but I use it instead of bute. I got great results from it and it helps my horses when they are uncomfortable. I use it for body soreness or  an injury. Haven't used it for super long periods of time, I would like to know too.

Thanks! Its an ingredient in Tight Joints Plus supplement. THey make a formula with it and without. I guess you could always use the one with it for the first series then switch to the one without.

The Show formula will now be called Gold and has the devil's claw removed, and the MSM is increased by 500

I don't know about kidneys and ulcers.... works fairly well for arthritic pain but it can stimulate the digestive system and causes colic like symptoms. I had a couple that would lie down and just act puny on it. A dose of Banamine put everything right again.

I found this.

Devil’s Claw Root has traditionally been used to relieve symptoms of joint disease. Clinical studies suggest it is just as effective for this purpose as anti-inflammatory drugs. Devil’s Claw has also been used to treat other problems such as back pain, headaches, gout, and poor digestion.

Good morning,
I just received your email and read this about at the same time, to answer your question, we have really not had any complaints, we have people that read stuff online and are afraid to use anything with Devils claw and just don't even try it is more of what happens. The majority of that information comes from message boards with peoples opionions not actual facts. As far as Devils claw causing kidney failure and colic that is a first for me hearing that. Our product has very little Devils claw in it compared to most of the products on the market that contain it in the first place. Also, our product is used and sold by many vets, who recommend to have their clients use it on their animals continuously. As far as the gold formula, we made that so it followed USEF guidelines for our show customers. We have probably sold 1 gold formula to every 100 regular formula. We are the number 1 selling joint supplement for 3rd year in a row in the Northwest. It's safe to say people are happy with our product. Do I think it will work for every horse? Absolutely not, not one supplement does or we wouldn't have so many choices lol.

From a personal standpoint, I board rehab horses for a living and also run barrels myself . We made the original formula over 20 years ago before we re did it and made the Plus. The original formula had the same amount of Devils claw in it. I have horses that I have ran that are 16 and 17 years old and were on it continually for years with no health problems. I get horses in that have ulcers for me to rehab, I start ulcer treatment and the tight joints plus right along with it and have never had a problem healing ulcers. My job is help horses, to give horses a second chance. I would not have created and be promoting a product that would harm horses. I know this turned into a book but I hope it hopes settle your mind :)

I wouldn't say that it causes colic, but some horses DO display colic LIKE symptoms from over stimulation of the digestive juices....think a gassy tummy. Not all horses react like this, probably most don't, but it is a possibility. Even though I have a couple react that way, I would try it again on a different horse. Nothing works or works the same way on EVERY individual.

Edited to add: my experience was with straight Devil Claw and/or Buteless, not as a smaller percentage ingredient in a formula product.

Thanks so much!! I used it before on several horses with great results and I just started it on my OTT QH and he was the only one I was concerned about. Its all good! My vet even agreed that 500mg of DC is such an extremely low dose she doubted it would have any negative effects. Thanks!

You are very welcome! Our product was designed on the concept of having the right mixture of ingredients that worked together not necessarily have a product that had the most of a certain ingredient on the market. We wanted something safe to feed long term for horses with chronic lameness issues. I also wanted to let you know that we are now selling in California. Your local feed store should be able to order it in for you, save you shipping.

I had a horse where anything with devils claw gave him really bad diarrhea. Since I had a semi-bad experience with it, I always buy the show formula of Tight Joints Plus. That's also pretty much the only joint supplement that horse can have because almost everything has devils claw in it.

Thanks! I am loving the results so far and I have ordered the show formula for the next round.
