I believe there are pros and cons to each regarding your horses' safety when tying your horse in the trailer or leaving them untied. I'm always very split whether to tie or not. I usually tie my fidgety mare that likes to look under the slants but then I usually leave my gelding untied. I know people who have bleeders are concerned about tying one where they are not able to drop their head while hauling. What's your thoughts, opinions or theories of why or why not you should tie?

We do both equally. If just one horse, I throw them in. We have a stock trailer with a center divider. If more than one I usually tie but sometimes not. It really depends on the age of the horse, if they are saddled and how far I am going. When I take weanlings in for health/coggins, I just run them all in together and don't tie. They are too little to feel if they go down on the 17 miles of gravel I have to travel to get to town.

I tie just because it makes me feel better. We hauled my daughters pony to a race with my mare. It started raining pretty hard so I put them in the trailer. Trailer started rocking around so we open it up to see what's going on and the pony had somehow managed to flip her self around the other way within her slanted area. She wasn't even that small. 13 hands, maybe a hair under.

I like the security of knowing they can't be putting their heads under the dividers, and can't shoot out of the trailer when I open it up. But that's just me.

We tie in all open stock trailers, however; did not tie when we had a two horse trailer where the horse could not turn around.

I don't tie in the trailer so they can get their head down to drain out the nasal air way.  If they are going to be fractious I tie.

I won't. We had a bad trailer wreck & I want their head free just in case.

In my experience I have had alot more trouble not tieing then tieing .. I guess pick your poison. I haul mostly in slant load I would be to concerned about tieing if it was a stock trailer.

Ditto. I only tie in the trailer if they don't play well with others.

We haul in stock trailers so we tie for the most part. We have several different heights to tie at though so if one needs to get his head down we could accommodate that pretty well. Slam gates would allow us to haul a couple without being tied if we wanted to.

I used to tie my horses all the time then I started hauling with my barn owner where I board and she doesn't tie her horses that are seasoned haulers. My mare used to be one of her so I can trust she will behave herself. She stands perfectly without being tied and waits patiently till I'm ready to back her out. My older gelding on the other hand... He never got used to being not tied and I have a feeling he would start to back out before I'm ready. I do see some people who tie their horses quite tight and especially if the trip is longer I wouldn't want to be tied in that uncomfortable position for that entire time..
