| What kind of feeding programs for 2-3 year olds have you had success with? I realize once they are 2 a "junior" feed is no longer "needed," but I feel like an Ultium, Omolene, Safe Choice, etc. would be too much (hot) for a young horse that is not yet competing. Your thoughts and experiences?
I will add... the two colts Im referring two had received grain, hay or any form of supplementation until they were a yearling and two year old, so they have been playing "catch up" since I brought them home.... |

Location: Montana | I've had recommended to me rice bran, as you don't need the starch or hotness of the Omolene or Ultium feeds. I'm one to do as natural as I can (alfalfa/grass hay, plenty of water, salt/mineral blocks, grain/pellet of some sort) and I feel like rice bran goes along well with that. |

Do you get rice bran at your local feed mill or a TSC type store? |

| Everything I have, even the weanlings, I am doing oats and flax. I do feed high quality aflalfa. Dr Tom Schell believes a lot of problems we see in our aged horses is from "processed," grains, so I'm trying a new approach and going to see what happens :) |

I'm sure I could find it at a mill, but couldn't use as much as they would want to sell me. I'd look into Manna Pro products for rice bran products, like Max E Glo.

| I feed a 14% protein pellet to all of my horses. Protein is important for growth, not fat. My vet recommends Platinum Performance which all of my horses get. Dr Honnas in College Station recommends Platinum Performance or CJ and also Platinum Osteon for joint development. |

Do you just feed .5-1 lb of RG to your young ones? Do you add any oats, etc.? |

I feed the weanlings & yearlings about 1-1.5lb per day, just depending on their size. Only thing I add is alfalfa and grass hay. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | The most important things are good high quality protein and minerals being balanced. They are using that to grow. I would try feed them enough to keep them a 6 on the Heineke body score. That should keep them fat enough to grow well without growing too fast. |

No, about 1/2 cup of flax. 1lb of Oats, sometimes less as he is getting fat! |

Dumb question... is the flax youre referring to the same as flaxseed oil? |

Nope, whole flax seeds. I don't grind it. |
