Chandler's Mom - 2016-01-18 8:43 PM She's beautiful in that picture. So sad, cause I like to think 22 isn't THAT old. . .

She had a rough start in her life. She was in a fire.

Could you tell me more of her story---I'm sure I'm one of the few on here that doesn't know it. . .

She was in a fire as a baby and it damaged her nostril.

From personal experience, 23 is the average life time of a horse. They can look great, have the best care and still die.

RIP Fiesta. She was a truly great horse.

In 1999, Kelly Yates of Pueblo, Colorado, received a very special gift from her parents. She got a card, and inside the card was an important piece of paper.

"My favorite gift was Firewater Fiesta", Yates said. "She was 5 years old, and my parents transferred her into my name and put her papers in a card and handed it to me. That was my best and favorite gift I will ever get in my life".

Firewater Fiesta is a 1994 gray mare sired by Fire Water Flit and out of a Mighty Mindy by Might Wild.

Yates credits many of her successes to the mare, including qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo three times, winning the Women's Professional Rodeo Association reserve world championship in 2000, wins at the Barrel Futurities of America Futurity and Derby and numerous other derbies, plus trophy trailers and more than $800.000. Fiesta was also a two-time AQHA/PRCA Horse Of The Year (2000,2001) and 2000 WRPA Horse with the Most Heart.

"She built my new house", Yates said. "She's done everything in the world for me".

Yates says her bond with "Fiesta" was special from the beginning. Bred by Yates' parents Dick and Jan Yates, Fiesta was in a barn fire as 2 years old. Yates worked with the terrified young horse, and they developed a strong relationship because of it.

"I spent more time off of her just being around her", Yates said, " When I started her on the barrels, she trusted me so much that it was just magic. She was a miracle. She's just so special".

Retired ate age 9 after an injury, Fiesta has a highly successful second career as a broodmare. Even though she has a new home in Brazil, Yates has several of her progeny in her barn that carry on the legacy of Fiesta's incredible talent.

I saw an article which said she was buried at Royal Vista - so was she brought back to the US recently?  Or maybe cremated?

She never went to Brazil. She stayed at Royal Vista. That is what I read after she was purchased.

Super sad, but sometimes horses just die. Maybe there wasn't a real reason except old age. RIP Fiesta

Chandler's Mom - 2016-01-18 6:43 PM She's beautiful in that picture. So sad, cause I like to think 22 isn't THAT old. . .

I don't think 22 is that old.  I have 3 that are 27 this year and they look good and get around fine.  One was still running barrels at 22 and placing in the 1D locally.  But all are different I guess and you never know when they will go or why.
