Location: MN | How many people do you know that use their main barrel horse as their breakaway horse too? Just curious as my barrel horse will also be my breakaway horse in the next year or so with lots of practice and tuning to be done! He was roped off of when he was a colt, so im hoping he has retained some of that. haha! Is it hard to have them do both?

Thats my plan! Hes a 1D locally, 2D at big stuff barrel horse. I just hope he loves it as much as he loves running barrels! Hes so smart so i know he will pick back up quickly. |

Location: Oklahoma | Every horse I run will run barrels/breakaway/tie-down. After the results I have seen in the last 3 years with my barrel horses I will keep this up even though I suck at roping. The bf always needs a new practice horse.
It keeps their mind fresh and teachs rate better than drilling on the pattern.

The wife ran her in barrels occasionally (when she had and itch to ride her and an extra slot in the trailer.) and the husband used her a lot more and he team roped off her. She's a really nice super consistent and fun ! 3-d/4-d. |

| Aside from my 2 colts that don't know anything yet, every horse I have ever owned had no trouble switching back and forth between barrels and roping. I would call myself a header/breakaway roper before barrel racer, so that was obviously their strengths, but no trouble nonetheless. Personally, I think it's good for them to have multiple jobs. It keeps their mind fresh and allows them to work muscles they wouldn't otherwise by mixing up their daily routines. Unless you're running Stingray, BabyFlo or something of the likes, I wouldn't hesitate to at least try it. |

Thats awesome! In my case the boyfriend does not ride horses lol. But I am excited for this new journey. I used to rope about 8 years ago until I broke my collar bone and it grew back broken...doctors didnt catch it because i had so much other stuff going on (bad horse accident). So excited to get back into it. |

| Mine will! We've only roped off him a couple times since it's winter, but I feel like he worked so much more freely on the barrel pattern after that.
We'll heel and breakway off him since that's what I do plus run barrels.

| I have in the past. Don't really breakaway anymore, but we team rope on everything. I think its great for them.
Even Stingray gets roped off of. :) I remember seeing a video of her heeling on fb. |

Location: MN | So cool. I live in Northern MN now so i wont be able to practice outside much at all until Spring/Summer...so roping the dummy in the garage for now is keeping me busy. I only have him for now so i feel like i could make more trips/longer trips making it more worth while entering 2 events instead of one! Thats my goal anyway. |

Location: Arkansas | I head off of my barrel horse (as well as haze on him). I've actually made the ARA (Arkansas Rodeo Assoc) Finals on him in both events the same year. These pics were taken the same night, 2nd round of finals.

Location: Canada | My main horse only runs barrels at the moment, but the horse I rope on does breakaway, head, heel, and tie down and he also runs barrels and poles. He'd be a 1D horse if I finished him out but as it stands I have less experienced riders running barrels on him and he's a 2D/3D horse.
My up and coming barrel horse was a tie-down and heel horse before I permanently borrowed him from my husband to be my backup barrel horse. I personally can't rope off him though because if you don't throw on the corner, or where he thinks you should have, he will stop dead and stare at you. Being shamed by my horse is a little embarrassing at roping practice  |

Its a little embarrassing to say the least! Luckily that has never happened to me but horses always find a way to humble you lol. |

Location: KS | I let someone use my barrel mare for calf roping if we didn't have a barrel race on weekends. I feel like it is good for them to do different things and not just get burned out on one thing. Plus, it kept her in great shape. |
