how do you know if they'll be competitive??

Going out of state this weekend to look at a few horses for a high school rodeo horse....question is how do you know if they'll be competitive in your area? Yes, I know poles are a given but what about barrels? They may be 1/2d in one area but 3/4d n another.

Tough question. If possible, you should try running the horses in the exact same size pattern and just see who runs the best. Even if you go to different arenas, try to do a small to medium pattern since not all places will have a large arena to practice in. Make sure you ask your parents to record/video AND time each horse. If possible, video the whole session with the horse, not just running barrels on him because you might not notice some things at first
(occupied or too excited
) that you can catch later and realize that it's something that you don't want to deal with or maybe it would be a huge plus in your book.
