What are the benefits of feeding flax seed?? And how much do you feed?? I know you have to grind it up before you can feed it to horses, but that's all I know.

There was a long thread last week about flax seed. Having said that you do NOT have to grind flax seed to feed it to a horse. That is a wives tail. Many on here feed it whole with great results. I personally feed 1 cup per horse daily. Half a cup each feeding. It's great for putting shine and condition on a horse. It also is good for skin , feet etc.

I've been feeding 1 cup at night
(whole
) to my horses, does it have to be split up? I'm also giving my broodmare with 2 months left 1/2 cup just because I heard a rumor it can cause early labor?? But she has crappy feet and is "fine" so the extra Omega 3's are good :

I feed whole to my horses once a day, 1/2 cup. I'm loving it!

1/2-1 cup daily. You can feed it whole. You CAN grind it up if you really want but never ahead of time because it will go rancid quickly and also loses nutrients. It's amazing for adding an overall glow of health from the coat to the hooves. Also horses should get more omega 3's than 6's to maintain a healthy inflammatory balance. Their only natural source of omega 3's is grass and freshly cut hay. All grains are higher in omega 6's so adding the flax helps balance that out.

I have been feeding it for several years. I ground it for a while, but quit that a couple years ago. I can not tell a difference in ground and not ground. One of the benefits for us is that is also helps remove sand. Living in Florida I'm always dealing with sand issues and have had no problems since we started with that. It forms a gelatenous goo with water, and it is supposed to pull sand out with it when fed regularly.
It is also supposed to be good for joints and for their coat. I would not be with out it here.
