I think we have all been there one time or another. Go and have fun. And I agree make a nice smooth ri and add speed as you get more comfortable. You can do it! And enjoy it.

I was in the same boat, after 10 years of having babies. I picked a horse right off the track and we went to work. Probably not my best idea, but it worked for us. We are a good team - he's lazy and I'm a chicken.
Anywho, I was super afraid of a crash - some epic disaster I had in my mind. Finally, my husband sat me down and said "what's the worst that could happen" .. I told him I was afraid of busting my head on the wall, or the alley, or something like that. My biggest fear was a head injury. Easy enough, I strapped on a helmet and INSTANTLY felt safer. We went from the slowest to winning the 3D that first run with a helmet, I mean it was that fast! So that's what helped me - oh, and enter those big races if you can afford it. No, you won't take home a dime. But you and your horse will bond over the week, you will gain confidence and learn something every trip out.

Yes, getting a helmet really helped me, too!

Lots and lots of trail riding so the two of you can bond and it will all come back to you.

I can lope this horse bareback down the dirt road and do frequently. It's just the actual competition that's the problem. I love all the suggestions! I wore a helmet and it did help, so plan to continue. I think more practicing at speed will help and also just entering. I don't go unless I can afford to not win, so it's OK if I don't pull a check. I will just plan on entering, being committed to the gym and wearing a helmet.
