Anyone a fan of it? I kinda want to do it to one of my horses but I'm worried about the fly season coming up.

I've done it.....don't see how flys would play into the mane. Because a fly will bite regardless of how long the mane is.

I just want to caution that it takes a real pretty neck to carry a roached mane. If your horse's neck is minutely course, has a heavy throat latch, slightly thin, basically has any imperfection in look, a roach will make it stand out 10 fold.

I just figured that having a mane would help swat the flies away if they shook their neck.

I think roaching went out in the 60's for a good reason.  Not a fan.

I grew up on POA's and Appy's...you know before Appy's were quarterhorses with spots. Like bronc halters, some horses can pull it off. My Appy's roached mane was a much better option than his 4 hairs his "mane" grew.

I had a big pretty solid app gelding.  With a mane he looked like a tank, we roached it and he looked stunning.  Fly season...makes no diffrence.

Depends on the horse and reasoning behind it I guess. If you want for personal preference, then I would agree with how it would look against the horses confirmation.

I have an andalusian colt I may have to roach since he rubbed the whole middle half of his mane off. Looks half roached anyway LOL. I know with a lot of breeds other than QH, it's very common for mares, escpecially broodmares to be roached.

I noticed roached manes coming "in" in the pleasure ring which I found bizarre. I agree with whoever posted making sure the conformation complients it.

I've only had one horse who looked better with a roached mane than without.  There is some upkeep though and it looked pretty terrible when I hadn't had the time to freshly roach him!

There are some horse that do look better roached.  There are more that don't.

The mares always chew the main off my gelding, I have to roach it once a year.

it isn't my favorite look but I kept my old geldings mane roached. I tried for 10 years to get his mane to grow. I finally gave up and roached it and it looked so much cleaner to me. It was very thin, short, and grew better in some places so he really just looked like a goober before. All of my other horses had long thick beautiful manes, and they got to keep theirs.

We just roached the mane on my daughter's rope/goat horse yesterday.  He always had a big (10") swath of "feederosis" from reaching through the rungs of the fence.  It stuck up in varying heights and looked ridiculous, so we took it off yesterday.  He looks like a Marine.  He has a pretty head and neck, so I think he can pull it off.  If not, I guess it will grow back.

I have one gelding that I roach because he has a thin, stringy, mane (if you can even call it that) and it looks terrible. Flies aren't a problem for him. My other horses, that have long pretty manes, I would never.
