Member Posts: 42	I am looking for a little free advice.... I am in my late twenties been around horses all my life. shown in about everything, from English hunt seat to Saddleseat, driving , western pleasure, trail, halter, rodeo. I have shown many different breeds, quarter, Arabian, half Arabians, ect. I competed in youth horse judging all throughout high school. I gave riding lessons at a national ranking establishment. I would say that i am confident that i am a good judge of horses as well as riders. many show award that i don't want to list ...... i want to start being a judge at some local shows , fun shows, stock shows, Arab shows. what would be the best way to go about it ? I havent judged a show before..... but i know that i would be fair and efficient . i have shown all my life and i feel this might be the next step for me thank you for any advice

Saint Stacey	You probably need to start out as a ring steward. I'd get ahold of your state association in whatever breed you want to start judging in and talk with them about stewarding. That way you learn a lot by taking the judges notes and helping with the classes. If it's a small, local type association I would do the same thing. After being a ring steward for a few shows they might hire you to judge.

Twin Sister to Queen Boobie Posts: 13315 Location: East Tennessee but who knows?!	I am carded with the OHSA and have been judging Open & 4H shows for several years. Before that I put on a local saddle club show for a few years. I've trained Arabs full time, worked in Gaited for a short while, and have competed in a lot of western/ranch/hunter events and give lessons on a part time basis. Being on the other side as a judge is a LOT different. Being a ring steward for a few shows and then shadowing several different judges would be good preparation for jumping into judging. As far as going for breed cards, a lot of them require you to go to at least one judging clinic and shadow a couple of judges. References are required as well and it can be somewhat of a lengthy process and in some cases pretty expensive.

Popped Posts: 20421 Location: LuluLand~along I64 Indiana	I know in our area judges are getting very scarce. The open shows have an old guard they go to but are desperately seeking some young judgers to try there hand at it. also Indiana ky and Michigan have a multi state judges seminar that travels around to each state each year. you can get carded for POA and 4H and get on their list of select judges. you also start as a novice on that list and then move up as you judge shows and get show managers feedback.
