I'm sure everyone knows the struggles we have had this past year with this mare, but We finally bred her yesterday (we think we will have to re-inseminate her again, but beside the point. haha), and so we were joking about buying her 'maternity' clothes ("Mommy to be" halter, anyone?) and then my non horsey mother made a joke about doing a gender reveal when we can determine it (yes, it's not 100% sure on gender til its born, but we can usually get a good guess, plus its just for fun). And before anyone scoffs it off, yes this mare is spoiled rotten and this is the first time we are breeding one of our own mares - and with how much stress this mare has caused us over the past year, we can use all the fun we can get.

So for fun, what would be cute ideas for a gender reveal for a horse? Google was no help, probably because we are the only dorks in the world that think it'd be fun. haha

No rude comments please, this is all just for fun.

I'm not sure, but I was thinking it would be fun to have a "baby shower" for my mare. But I can also see the look on people's faces when I ask them to come to a baby shower...before I even tell them it is for a horse!  But mostly because no one expect me to be having a baby shower...of any kind, LOL.
I didn't know you could find out the gender of a horse baby, even on a maybe, in an ultrasound.
You could do something like "Hay neigh-bors, we're having a filly!" Or colt if that's what it is.
Hope things go well with your mare and getting her in foal.

I LOVE this idea. This sounds like something I'd do with my mares!

Yes, you can gender a horse. I will look up in my repro notes at home the specific time frames. I believe there are two windows during the pregnancy that through ultrasound a vet can determine.

My mare's due in 10 days and my non-horsey co-workers want to throw me a baby shower! It's very sweet of them but I keep telling them I don't need anything, momma will take care of that baby's needs just fine for a while

It has to be done between 60 and 70 days.

I don't know about a gender reveal party but I do know the next time I have a horse baby, I'm having a baby shower.  I can't have kids and my horse babies are my kids for all intents and purposes.  For years I've gone to everybody else's baby showers, bought tons of gifts and supported them so I think it's only fair that I get the same for my next young one.

As for the reveal, a horseshoe cake would probably be real easy to make.  I think you can really do a reveal/baby shower together for a horse since it really doesn't matter colorwise what you put a on filly versus a colt (at least not in the human boy/girl context).  Register for brushes, blankets, halters, combs, horse treats, wraps and other small cheap items that aren't too hard for people to figure out when they go into a tack or general store to buy.  Have a party and play your favorite horse movie for everybody to watch.

I was really expecting people to think we were nuts. and yes, my first reaction was da f? when they first mentioned it but the more I thought about the more fun it sounded. haha So I'm glad I got lots of mixed reactions. haha a baby shower is a good idea too, with the gender revealed within the party.

Also, yes, they can ultrasound it and have a good guess, but our vet (a very great vet) says she will never guarantee a gender - not even on her own horses.

Your "Adulting is exhausting." is waaaay too true.

I think, provided my mare gets in foal (fingers crossed and prayers said), I'm going to have a baby shower for her. Not sure if I'll have a gender reveal, as my vet says the last ultrasound before fall at 45 days, then at fall I think they do it in time for the pneumabort vaccines. If it is a more high risk pregnancy, perhaps again at 60 days, and maybe I'll get to find out. We'll see how it goes. :-)  And I hope you have fun! And I agree, everyone needs another excuse to have cake! LOL.

Okay, here's another baby shower questions (maybe not necessarily gender reveal): when should you have a horsey baby shower? Closer to due date or when?

Sounds like fun. Gender reveal is usually to reveal to one or both parents, but you could do a reveal to party guests, since you will probably already know. I would ask for no gifts, but give out small gift bags of treats and such to anyone who shows. Maybe you could do a cake in the shape of a barrel with either pink or blue cake color under the icing.

I would definitely want to stay with the whole "gender reveal" theme. Just have to think up a horsey way to do it. Maybe a tiny pink or blue foal halter inside something like a ballon.
